Citrus in the news! The rare Dekopon
Comments (41)Pam, I wouldn't worry about it. Most likely the fruit will drop off itself. If not, simply pluck the fruit when it's about bb sized. And yes, most likely the seedling was a clone of the mother plant. The Dekopon is a hybrid, but that has nothing to do with its seeds. The Dekopon is polyembryonic, which means it will produce more than one seedling per seed, and the strongest seedling will be the clone. It often will crowd out the pollinated or hybrid seedlings and they may simply tamp off. Your seedling will grow quickly, and may produce quickly for you, if you're already seeing flowering. So, leave the flower alone, enjoy it. See what happens. Post up some photos, we'd love to see your little tree! Patty S....See MoreDekopon/Sumo seedling help!
Comments (79)Souther California has superior citrus growing parameters to any of us northerners. In 2 .5 years my tangerine trees top 6 & 7 feet and stopped growing thorns. Flowering was just down the road had I lived in So.Cal. I was unable to cover my tangerine trees this past winter and 2 died one died back to 2 feet and is doing well. He can still get a grafted tree and still plant the seedlings outside with high hopes....See MoreDekapon/Sumo
Comments (16)Yes and yes, Mike. Keep the strongest one, that will be the clone seedling. You can keep the others, just know they could be hybrids. But, since Dekopon are grown in large blocks, your multiple seedlings actually have a good chance of being either all clones, or a hybrid of a Dekopon and a Dekopon. So, I would keep them all, just label them accordingly. And yes, it is Harris Nursery in FL that are propagating the Shiranui (same thing as Dekopon), and I believe they have been able to get inspected and approved for shipping out of state (to non-citrus states). So, mandarin, if you want to contact Harris Nursery in Florida, they can ship to you if you're not in a quarantined citrus state. And fairfield, if Four Winds can ship to you, not sure what the concern is?? I'm not following you. Is it Harris Nursery that cannot ship to you? And that they can ship to AL or MS, and someone could simply drive across the state line? People do nefarious things all the time, so this is not really surprising. Just human nature at it's not finest :-( Patty S....See MoreDekopon fruit - tasty, heavenly fruit
Comments (52)Hi everyone, here is a picture of my SugarBelle. She has the same parentage as Page which is minelleo x clementine. From what I learned on the web, the fruits should look like minneleo but a little bit smaller and sweeter! I give her a little bit of support because she is so thin and is very windy here (it is not a vey good summer). I will remove the stake once she will be inside for winter. Brian... yes temptation is very, very strong! The first time I went to floraexotica I just bought the Dekopon because well, I have to stop somewhere. I couldn t buy to big trees it seems too much at that tome. After I went home, I was not able to forget about the SugarBelle and I am pretty sure that all that thinking and missing shouldn t be good for my health so I went back to buy the SugarBelle! I talked to David from greenscape yesterday and he is ok to put aside a valentine pummelo for me!!! I am very excite!! After that, I will stop for sure!! No more thinking. I will repeat Junk4us everynight: I don t need more trees. I don t need more trees....See MoreHome
