Help! Need advice re warm winter coat!
Comments (4)Keep an eye on the end-of-season sales at the web sites of LL Bean, Lands' End, and Eddie Bauer. Last year, I bought a jacket like that, with a removal fleece liner that I wear all the time when it's not cold enough for the full jacket. It was marked down to $60-something. Yesterday at LL Bean, in their Thursday Mark-down section on the sale page, they offered a similar jacket (tho' not with removable liner) marked down from $160 to about $50-60. Last year, I also bought a black/white herringbone wool, lined, p-coat from them marked way down... it was a steal and fits me perfectly. These sites run sales all year long so keep a close eye on them....See MoreExtra winter coats where to store?
Comments (10)I'm in a similar boat, in terms of varying weather. And I don't even have a coat closet! We do have hooks in the front hall, but that gets really crowded and unwelcoming. Add to it the problem that only DH and I have a clothes closet--the kids only have dressers. Works OK for most clothes, but not coats. I've taken to hanging my coats in my bedroom. (of course, my bedroom isn't upstairs. It is on the far side of the apartment, but I've taken to going there to drop off my purse & tote bag anyway, and since I wear my purse over my shoulder, I have to take my purse off to take my coat off. I find that at any given time, there's one coat that's"primary"; if I need another coat bcs of a shift in the weather, it'll only be for a day or two (slickers, for example). So storing those seldom-needed coats of my kids' in my bedroom closet is fine--if the kids really need them, I'll go get them....See MoreWinter coats
Comments (39)You can't go wrong with either LLBean or Lands End for winter coats, but take a look at North Face and Michael Kors also. I have a North Face jacket that is super warm, even in windy Boston. But I need options, so I have 2 Michael Kors puffers-one very puffy and warm, the other sleek and comfy, but not so warm. My best coat for warmth is my old mink coat, but I can only wear that when walking in the dark within my neighborhood. Another coat, lined with <gasp> rabbit fur was purchased over 10 years ago in Florence is also both warm and stylish. Robo, I've had 3 winter babies and have braved many winters to walk them daily. I always wore a hat, scarf and ski gloves. Walked for miles..... Michael Kors puffy puffer...See MoreIf you only had one winter coat...
Comments (62)Lascatx, there are methods of thawing the ground to dig graves, and some states require it. It's more expensive, but it's done. https://adventuresincemeteryhopping.com/2015/02/27/frozen-funerals-how-grave-digging-meets-modern-times/ eta. as a sidenote of why I know this above... I once met a young man who was studying to become a mortician. Most funeral homes tend to be family businesses, but he wanted to enter this field without having a family background. First, we discussed these challenges (I wasn't aware of the whole culture of mortician work), and then, because he was receptive to my questions, I asked him a slew of questions about what happens to a body after it expires. Frozen ground came up, and he explained much of what the article above states. The whole discussion was just so fascinating, and this kid had such a calming yet matter-of-fact approach to it all. He had truly found his calling....See MoreBobbi
