Thanks kindly. Before I read your comment I was thinking it's either spider mites or a fungal infection or both. I'm going to treat the plant with a good wipe down, then a spray of Neem oil, dishwashing liquid, water. As far as I'm aware Neem should help tackle both, of course depending on what type of fungal infection it could be. What's weird is that I thought spider mites loves dry conditions, but the fungal infection I think the plant has is from water. I honestly can't figure it out! Regardless, I think the fungal infection it may have is Phytophthora Leaf Blight. If this is the case, I doubt any intervention is going to help the plant out very much. I'd suspect fertiliser burn. Every now and then you need to completely flush out the soil with clean water to remove excess mineral salts (fertiliser). With your hot weather water in the pot will be evaporating leaving fertiliser plus anything that has been added to water by the water supply company. Give that a try and check the new leaves as they open out. The damaged leaves won't recover.

Sweet potatoes from the grocery store is a different type of tubers than used for the sweet potato vines used in planters. The only elephant ear I know from a grocery store is a pastry. You have to buy the bulbs from a garden center.

I have a large garden on my property that is never dry, and sometimes if we have rain for several days in a row it's downright gushy. I've been trying various plants in it that supposedly like moist soil for 5 years and most of them don't make it. The soil is clay but has been amended continuously. This garden gets sun in mid-morning and through afternoon, depending on the time of year. So far, Japanese forest grass does very well and a Turtlehead is surviving this year. I have read that EE's like wet soil, so I'd like to try some. I will plant 7 (or maybe I'll start with 3 and see how it goes). The middle one will be the tallest (5' or so would look nice) with the rest getting gradually shorter, and that's one of my questions--can anyone suggest EEs that grow to about 5' and some others that grow to 4' and 3'? My other question is should I buy them already growing in pots this fall, take them out of the pots and plant them in the ground, or leave them in their pots and put those pots in the ground? Oh, also, is fall a good time to plant a growing EE or should I wait until spring and plant them as bulbs?
