From iPhone 4 to 6s or 7?

I'm embarrassed to admit that I still use an iPhone 4. Yes, I need to upgrade.

But I'm the type of person who does not like to buy anything new. Before
my iPhone 4 I had a flip phone. Then I bought my iPhone from a
co-worker.

To make a long story short, I would love to buy another used and unlocked iPhone from someone.

My question: Should I shoot to get a 6s or plan to cough up much more money and get a 7?

Also, I'm definitely looking at Craigslist ads for used cell phones. But
does anyone know another place I can look for used iPhones?

Any feedback will be highly appreciated.

Probably not as cheap as you want but when I purchased mine at the AT&T store they had some reconditioned ones. Amazon normally has one or two. Could also check the pawn shops but some of those may be slightly warm.

That was my first thought when I started reading complaints, app developers will be all over it & go 'retro'. Rumor had it on some boards that iOS7, when in beta phase, was being designed to compete with android (never saw an android in action myself, so don't know if it now compares). I'm still going to hold out but the only drawback to that is most app updates are going to be for 7 and if one isn't careful could accidentally update some apps that won't behave on 6. Still hoping Apple listens, this has been the first smart phone that I haven't wanted to pitch out a window at 60 mph (as opposed to my prior blackberrys, which made me go bat crazy sooner or later). Thanks for your response Davidtay. We have decided to install 6 Cree GU24 cans now and then order the CR6s when they are available, which I understand will be in late August. We decided against the LR6 based on the extra cost we would have to pay. We do not like the looks or the grease trapping potential of the ridges that show on the LR6 between the lens/glass covering the led lights and the edge of the trim. I know that you can purchase a smooth white trim to cover the ridges, however, then the total cost of the LR6 "bulb" and trim is close to $100,verses the $60 -$70 that the CR6 is supposed to cost. According to the Cree representative, the CR6 will have a smooth surface between the lens covering of the led lights and the edge of the trim.

Generally yes it will use accessible, accepted wifi first then when not available out and about it accesses the mobile network for all transmission phone calls and data transmission. It will show you if there are wifi networks available around you, most will be locked and not available. If you are located near a free hot spot it will notify you of the network and if you want to use it you can click on it and connect. Some free hot spots require that you get a password from them to use their free network. Keep in mind that any open free hot spots is just that open to anyone and not secure so don't be doing banking or using credit cards. I personally don't even access my email on an open hot spot.

I'm home with my new phone and have everything pretty much setup. Most everything transferred wirelessly at the Apple store but some apps required reconfiguration including my Ring doorbell which physically required me to go outside to the device. It took an hour for the stuff to transfer so while that was going on I played around with a demo phone and learned more about the 11 Pro including how to get the top half of the screen to come down to the bottom so you can cover the large screen with one hand. I had seen someone do that with an older phone but forgot about it until today. Also learned that the phone uses infrared to ID your face at night so I guess that won't be a problem. Now just waiting for my case to be delivered from Amazon today and then I'm good to go. We usually buy our phones at the AT&T store but I'm such an early bird this time that they didn't have any of this model in stock so I had to go to the Apple store. I thought I might get the green color but they were out of that so I got gold. I've always had grey or black so something different and I got a clear sparkly case so I'll be relatively blingy compared to the past. That place was busy as ever - not quite as bad in the middle of a week day - one of the joys of retirement.

The biggest problem with older phones, especially “sealed” phones like the iPhone is that it probably needs a new battery. If you haven’t seen the news Apple has a bit of a public relations problem with their older phones slowing down because of weak batteries. Right now they’re willing to fix them for $29 but normally it’s closer to $90.

Personally, if I was looking for a used iPhone I’d buy one from Apple. While more expensive, you get a Apple certified phone with a full, 1-year factory warranty and a NEW battery.

If you go the Craigslist route, make sure you check the IMEI before parting with your cash.

Given the amount of time you keep phones (which is remarkable), I would suggest you get the 7 which is already one model behind the current one. Keep in mind that Apple only builds their new OS's to go a few models back which means your older devices don't get the new updates and security patches. That means your devices and any data on them are more susceptible to vulnerabilities. That alone is enough for me to suggest the newer model.

Beyond that, the 7 will have better specs, and more space to store your data so 8 years from now when you're looking for a newer iPhone 14 or whatever model will be out, it will be just a bit closer to updated specs. They aren't crazy different in specs, and would be a different conversation if you replaced every few years, but 8.

If you're looking for the best deal on the phones, wait until September when the next models come out and the 7 will be even cheaper. But, either way, you're getting your money's worth
