droid or I Phone
Comments (6)Assuming this is your first cell phone, do you really want a smart phone? Smart phone (Droid, iPhone, Blackberry) are better for doing "internet" activities than being a phone. Get a smart phone if you want access to things like texting, email, www sites, google maps etc... from anywhere. For which smart phone, I'd recommend the Motorola Droid. My reasons. 1. Motorola Droid is supported on the Verizon network. 2. I have the Motorola Droid, been very reliable. 3. My wife has Blackberry Storm, which hasn't been as user friendly or stable as the Droid. Takes more "clicks" to send a text message than a Droid - I find that to be a pain. Blackberry syncs to your PC, Droid doesn't. 4. Youngest daughter has HTC running Android. While similar to the Motorola Droid in many ways - syncing all your contacts etc.. to gmail doesn't seem to be supported? 5. Syncing contacts to gmail means if I add a contact on the phone, it automagically goes to gmail contacts and vis versa. No need to back up the phone. 6. Oldest daughter has her own ATT plan with iPhone. Telephone calls are TERRIBLE quality. Calls drop all the time. We live in the same area so it's either phone or ATT service? Don't have that problem with Droid/HTC/Blackberry on Verizon. 7. Friend/neighbor has iPhone. Same problem with calls dropping. 8. Nephew has iPhone, calls dropping is a problem for him too. If you have/use an iPod and have an extensive library of music purchased from iTunes - get the iPhone. iPhone is easily the most user friendly. If iPod/music isn't a concern - then get the Droid on Verizon....See MoreNew Pentair IntelliTouch ScreenLogic interface for iPhone
Comments (54)Apple has said that all 150,000 iPhone apps should work without a problem on the iPad. I will report in on Monday after I get mine. Pesh - you can create a macro in the ScreenLogic PC configuration setup. On page 2 of 5, you can create a new Feature Circuit and call it Lights. Then go into the Feature Circuit Configuration button and check off what existing circuits will come on when you activate Lights. After this, assign it to show up on the Water Features/Main page. Then it will show up on the Circuits page of the iPhone interface. Note: for a circuit to show up on the iPhone circuits page, it has to be assigned a location in ScreenLogic (Pool, Spa, or Water Features)....See MoreNew iPhone: pay in full or pay way less with 2-year contract?
Comments (36)Update. I visited both the Apple Store (to hold iPhones) and the AT&T store to discuss upfront costs and plans. The jury's still out on whether to get a 6s or 6s Plus. I was annoyed at first when I had to sign up and wait to be seen by someone in the AT&T store. I almost left in a polite huff and decided that would be foolish, so I hunkered down and waited. I'm glad I did because a very very knowledgeable young woman answered all my questions. She actually gave me way more info than I needed, but here's the deal: In my case, lascatx is wrong about them charging me monthly for the balance of the phone and not stopping until I bring it to their attention. In the past, I have opted for 2-year contracts at a lower, subsidized price. All I paid monthly was for my plan, i.e., voice, data, text. That was/is one of the benefits of locking into a contract. The salesperson told me that AT&T is one of the few carriers still doing this and soon, within a year, they will cease altogether. The option is still available to me to do this, but it would be the last time. My $70/mo total bill, which includes an unlimited data plan, is still mine to keep. I can buy the phone at the lesser amount and agree to a 2-year contract, or I can buy the phone for the full price. I'm not interested in paying over time and having it added to my monthly bill. If I decided to break my contract at any point, I will have to pony up the balance. So, really no risk at all for me to do the contract, as it's a savings of $450. She mentioned $40 here or there if I do one or the other, but at that point, I had reached my saturation point and I'm not gonna fuss over that amount. I hope this has been helpful. I have an existing plan I'd like to keep; I seem to do well with phones for two years; paying less is also nice....See MoreWhy You Suddenly Need To Delete Google Maps On Your iPhone
Comments (21)"I can use Google apps on my Apple iPhone, and sync that iPhone with my Microsoft laptop running Windows." Apple products are still less, not more, interoperable with third party products. A friend of mine, a pretty consistent Apple products user, has to maintain a Windows PC to use three very common financial products - Turbo Tax, Quicken, and Quickbooks. One of the three-maybe Turbo Tax - has a Mac version but my friend says it sucks compared to the Windows version. I think two of the others aren't available at all in Mac versions. These are widely used programs, with tens of millions of customers. As far as Apple compatibility with other standard products, well, duh. Maps are another good example. The iPhone map app has struggled, playing catchup for years and years and (according to iphone users I know) still isn't there yet. They could easily encourage use of the Google Map app to give users a more useful capability but they won't do so. My immediate thought concerning what lars was talking about when he said "I prefer to have more choices than what Apple offers". is how in the Apple world, there are few user configurable options and no alternative sources of equipment manufacturers (which keeps prices somewhere in check). As an example of inflexibility, I use Itunes as a "podcaster" or podcast aggregator. In it I choose what podcast series I want to receive regularly and when I trigger an update, it does the download. Itunes has this annoying feature that it periodically unsubscribes me from podcasts I've set up to have downloaded. . I called Apple support and asked why. The support guy asked "Do you ever listen to the podcasts on your PC?" I said "No". He said "That's one of the most useful features - when you haven't listened to the podcast in (I think he said) 2 weeks, we know you don't want it anymore so we switch the status to "not subscribed". I said - "No, not at all. I download the podcasts to the PC but then transfer the files to two different portable players that I use to listen to them. In doing that, I never listen on the PC. How can I change the setting so that it doesn't keep unsubscribing me". He replied- "You can't change that setting, it's made that way to be most useful to our customers" I got what I should have expected - a BS answer akin to the joke from long ago in the consumer-market software industry - No, that isn't a bug, that's an intentional feature. WIndows PC and Android device users are accustomed to being able to choose configuration options so that the devices behave as they prefer. I understand that at first pass sometimes for beginner level users, this can provide some difficulties and frustrations but all of it is well documented and can be learned. Apple products often don't offer options....See MoreUser
