Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and although I've always had an affinity for snake plants, I didn't get my thumb green enough until recently to know how to take care of them. I acquired the typical Sans. trifasciata (yellow side ribs, dark green/light green stripes in the middle (Laurentii maybe?)) from a relative that worked at Lowes and it was being thrown out. That parent is the worst looking part of the plant now but it's still happy and producing more. Anyway, I recently bought myself what I think is a Moonshine because I've been obsessed with different varieties that I've seen online. I started to research different varieties only to find that there are over 130 kinds. *Enter new obsession/hobby* My main question is how do you guys come across the different types, I'm a little hesitant to buy plants online for fear of them showing up with little to no life left in them. I know that occasionally I see a different kind at Lowes/Home Depot and it's all I have to not buy them immediately. Regardless, I'm a Sans lover for life.

So glad you were bitten! hehe!

I'm lucky enough to have some vendors nearby...at least I did when I first started. I'm also a member of a Cactus and succulent society and I get some from other members. Also we do some trading here on the forum. If you lived near me i would gift you some! Not a really good time of year to be mailing.

Yeah, unfortunately, I looked up a local Cactus/succulent society in NC and found absolutely nothing. I'm just going to build up my collection from happenstance and then maybe I can trade with people after I get some locally. I lucked up and found what I believe is a hahnii silver marginata today. The place also had some hahnii golden which were all sold... I'll have to go back later :)

Minimac, the grower was saying NOT to use anything as a preventative, but to do exactly what you did: Isolate instead. Now, you only have two pots to deal with instead of your whole collection. He was saying that if you use something like Marathon all the time when it is not needed, the bugs (or pathogens) more quickly become immune to it and than it doesn't work anymore. Better, according to him, to battle them ONLY when you get them. If it were my, I'd try DE first, but that's just because of asthma and other lung problems, so I choose to always try a non-chemical approach first. Not sure what I'd do next...if I loved it and used chemicals, I'd try them next. If I loved and and didn't use them, I'd try topping it and just make sure I took no soil with me. I'd keep it isolated, too. I've heard of people using Marathon and saying it works well, so if you have it, that might be a good thing to do. Here is a link that might be useful: Dcotor Optimara link

Medonto: I agree with all of Trudi's suggestions, but I have said on this forum the best marker is one from Lee Valley. I just removed some from my front bed today that have endured two winters and last summer and look as good as when I labeled them. I use pieces of plastic from fabric softener bottles, but they also work on popsicle sticks. You can remove the ink with acetone (nail polish remover) and re-use or keep them for annuals/toms/veggies which you sow every year. You could also use Trudi's idea and label on the underside. I did that my first year, but did not like the idea of having the lift the entire container up to see what was inside. Good luck with the ID's. Northerner.

cactusmcharris - Thanks for the reply. All of these will be planted in the ground, none in pots. During the entire winter, they will be overshadowed by my house. The sun is behind my house for the entire day during winter. During summer, the sun is in the front of my house. So in summer they will get 8 hours direct sun per day, in winter they will get 0 hours direct sun per day. I have some boxwood shrubs, a crabapple and a couple other plants in this spot and they do good without any winter sun. I'm definietly going to plant them all around the yard, just incase the ones in the shade during winter don't make it. It just has me wondering now since they are almost all planted. I plant a lot of trees and I know that (at least from what I've planted) they require no direct sun when dormant. Only when they are growing. I wonder if sedums are the same way. Rina - Those all look great! Can't wait to see my little cuttings grow into something like those.

You can grow from a leaf cutting. you have to be very patient but it works. I wouldn't mind sending you a bunch of leaf cuttings when it gets a little warmer but you will have to remind me.
