Do you have a decorator/designer?
Comments (15)I also used decorators at various stages. After DH drew up the original plans and before we took them to the architect, we had the designer draw in furniture, etc. It only took about an hour for her. We wanted to ensure there were no major design issues regarding furniture placement. We did not use her again as DH was not crazy about her and we both felt her hourly rate was too high--she was more than our architect per hour. I was not going to pay someone $130 an hour to go shopping with me. In one day, a person could really rack up a bill. She had some great practical pointers about our design though. Paint color was where I needed some assistance, and I used a friend-designer. I found my 3 ring binders of photos to be helpful and I even made a form page for each room with theme, flooring, possible wall colors, furniture, lighting ideas, room use, etc. This kept me on track also. I found lighting to be tough until I referred to my notebook and realized I wanted a rustic elegant look. Boom! I used that as my search term and found many items on the Internet for lighting (after weeding out the antler chandeliers). I found it too limiting to go to lighting stores in person and like the other poster, I looked at thousands of fixtures. It is easier if you have a theme. I spent 3 hours looking for pendant lights for the kitchen. Most are contemporary but wow, when I saw the ones we bought, I knew that was what I wanted. Tile was tough as most tile store employees were not helpful. I used a designer for the foyer and mud room and she was awesome to get me started. I called a tile store and asked them if they knew of any tile designers. They said there was one designer in quite frequently and they recommended her as she was so familiar with the product. Her hourly rate was much more reasonable than the first person and we met at the tile store where she put together various combinations knowing I wanted a slate look foyer and had some bronze leaf tiles to embed. She does all types of design work but I have not used her since but would not hesitate to call her for some projects. After that project, I found eventually found a tile store owner who was helpful and had great design skills and she and I sat down every Saturday morning for six weeks going through my notebooks and putting together various combinations for the bathrooms, foyer, mud room and backsplash. It took a long time even though our home is mostly hardwood. Tile can be tough especially as you know it is so permanent. For furniture, our local Slumberland offers a free design service. They came out ten days ago and the presentation was yesterday. We will be buying some items from them as we liked their style in the store and some of their ideas. Good luck, Teresa...See MoreWhat do you do in the mean time when you're decorating stuck?
Comments (6)Seriously, Honestly? I go to the Gallery and spend hours and hours going over all the latest pictures that Oceanna posted. Today, a little over 3 hours at the Gallery (Gee, thanks Oceanna! *wink*). Got nothing, zippo, nada done. Way too many ideas doing Funny Car crashes in my grey matter for me to make a firm decision on my projects so might as well go look-see everyone elses projects. Actually, truth be told there is no name for my 'style'. Believe me, I've searched. No way to describe it online so that I can get a decent search going. Because there is no name for my style, I come to a point where I get stuck ----- (the fact that my ideas have to be done on a miniscule budget makes it all that more difficult.) Kitchen not finished --- going on 15 months. Backyard/Garden Decor not done --- going on 7 months. Family Room not done --- going on 20 months. Sunroom not done --- going on 28 months. Master Bedroom not done -- going on 9 months. (Won't count the Master bath because in all fairness, we just started it. But I'm sure I'll come to a grinding halt there, too.) Why? Because I'm stuck, can't make a decision and stick to it because I can't find ideas for what I see in my mind's eye. I know there's got to be inspiration out there for what I'm trying to create but so far, haven't found it. I get ideas, tips and opinions from all the talented folks here and put them into play and all starts looking good but to head to the finish line? Nope. Isn't happening. So, I go to all the neato new photos on the Gallery side, thanks to Oceanna, kill a ton of time and not get a thing accomplished. Then I feel guilty for not accomplishing anything and I start the whole process over again. Amity, who is heading over to the gallery, again. lol...See MoreDo you have problems decorating certain areas?
Comments (11)Yes. My living/family room in our 60's ranch style house that we recently purchased. It is very tiny and narrow with a large bay window and a bar that separates the living room from the kitchen. Of course, the wall that the bar is on, runs all the way down the middle of the house to create the hallway to the bedrooms making picking a paint color a challenge. Ideally I would reconfigure the entire house, but that kind of work is not in the budget right now so I have been struggling with making it look nice the way it is. My latest dilema has been trying to find a paint color that works in the tiny living room area, and down the hallway, and to the back of the living room area where we have some bookcases. Oh, and to make it a bit more complicated, I have a chair rail all the way through this area, and my bay window is a 5-part window which I am having the hardest time finding window hardware for since it all has to be top-mount. I am not quite sure I want window shades, so I now have paper across the window since I pulled the ugly vertical blinds down about three weeks ago. I am still trying to find a solution that I like for the window. Needless to say, there are lots of design challenges in my living room. I wish I had a fairy goddesigner to help me make this room work. I am certain it keeps me up at night - ugh - Ok, enough of my ranting....See MoreDo you have a set budget when decorating?
Comments (16)When we do major projects we have a plan. We decided this year to do some upgrades so we had to plan money for them. Redo fireplace, shutters in rooms prior owner did not install them in, front landscaping, new laminate and tile in downstairs, new tv over the fireplace. I am really proud to say that we stayed within budget, so far. On black friday we did not see anything for the tv. I wanted to keep it at $2500, but dh was getting closer to $3500, not making me happy. At 530pm we realized we misread the price on an ad and were able to buy two tvs for $2500. We put one over fireplace and one in our playroom where we are trying to get all the games to be played but kids did not enjoy their 27" tube tv as much as the 57" downstairs. This was a total win/win! I found my flooring and waited for the sale at Lowes. Put it on a credit card with points, paid for it immediatly, and saved another $25. I found my tile and will open a card to get 10% off, then pay it immediatly. The landscaping just took some careful planning. We got huge deal on some palm trees. Everything is on drip so the water is not wasted. The shutters were more than planned only because we were matching existing style and so I did not have much choice. I have never used design stores but did on a recommendation. I did get a great price on a great product. It was less than HD or Lowes. I had a hard time paying for that but the resale factor on house- not that I plan to move anytime soon- did help me swallow the pain. Now dh did want to upgrade some of our audio equipment that I always hate forking out dough on. But we need to simplify the equipment so we don't have wires everywhere. He found a site where the tv wall mount we could get locally for $125 was only $25 and the cable he needs for the receiver is only about $10 vs $100. He found some amazing speakers on clearance and when he went back to store for something else, noticed an additional markdown so he saved even more. Then he found the receiver he bought locally, cheaper online with no tax or shipping. So that just came the other day. So he did spend money but did a great job doing it. The place we save the most money on is labor. We do it all! We did pay $300 for fireplace store to put in the fireplace and chimney pipe, but we did the rest. We dug the huge hole for the palm trees and spent $300, my girlfriend paid someone to do hers, don't ask but it was way more. I know not everyone can DIY but there are many ways to DIY on smaller things. Like painting. You may hate it but you will save a lot. I had a sofa I loved but it did not fit new house. Since it was older but in great shape, I cut out one cushion of the sectional myself. It looks perfect and fits just right. No one knows it was not bought that way. Saved a ton! I mentioned putting things on the card to get the points. I also have a point system with my bank. I earn points on every purchase done as credit instead of debit. Really helps when dh returns something too, it goes back to my checking account instead of his pocket to be spent on Del Taco. There are lots of ways to have a budget stay within it and be happy....See Morearcy_gw
