Advice: very narrow galley kitchen
Comments (12)Also to consider is an interesting idea in the new Consumer Reports kitchen issue that I actually haven't seen covered here many, many times already. Nothing's new under the sun when it comes to layout, of course, but they reported as a trend the laying out of narrow kitchens with all storage floor to ceiling (or however high) on one side, allowing the main side to remain open counter devoted to work space. It makes excellent sense for some situations as in a narrow kitchen it would provide very generous storage space a quick pivot from a nice spacious work counter. And that middle area that's usually air space above a counter would instead be very convenient-height storage for the most commonly needed items. The sort of setup where a 7-foot width to work with could be an asset, and basically like some of the recommendations Charlikin is considering. Like her, an issue would be the fridge, which would need to be storage-depth or not much more one way or the other, either by buying a shallow one or by borrowing a foot of depth from a spot on the other side of the storage wall. Regarding mention of a dining area (hi, Laurence), years ago a friend had a long narrow kitchen with a very cushy comfy seat and table built in across the far end from the door. (Lots of cushions covered with sari-print fabric, that's how long it was.) Anyway, even though they had no kids, lots of people were always dropping by and hanging out there with the cook. There was no window, but they did cut a little opening in a side wall for a kind of surprise diagonal view across the entry and a bit of the living room....See MoreNarrow Kitchen Layout - Help!
Comments (75)Just popping in to say how great it is you are getting such valuable help, isn't GW wonderful? My only offering is to say I wouldn't worry about landing space next to the fridge in a kitchen with a 5 ft-ish walkway. You can totally work off the sink run counter for putting food away and getting things out. I don't see a problem and certainly not enough of one to warrant 'design acrobatics' to have an expensive or not really useful spot. Love the design as it stands now! You are making great changes. Ditto the comment on drawers. I even have drawers under my sink, which I love. There are no lower door cabs in my kitchen and I haven't regretted it once, to the contrary I'm really glad. I also have medium tone wood cabs and medium tone cork floors and it's amazing how much they don't show dirt. I just washed the floor yesterday so I have a real eye opener on that topic, ha....See MoreLong and narrow kitchen / dining layout
Comments (9)The sink and DW tucked into the angle means that you can't have the DW open while you're standing at the sink, and you'll potentially be prepping over the DW (it can be done, but isn't ideal). Putting the DW to the left of the sink makes it easier to use - but when it's open, it will block the aisle. Perhaps swapping the DW and trash would help - but then the end cabinet gets narrower and potentially less useful. With no upper cabinets by the range, where will you keep spices and cooking oils? The drawers next to the range will be taken up with cooking utensils, potholders, pots and pans. While no uppers opens up the space, I don't know if you have enough storage to make it work. It's important to work out what will be stored where as you go along....See MoreHelp w/ layout of small, narrow kitchen/living/workspace in 1 bedroom
