Thanks guys. SummerS, that's a dangerous site for me to wander about unsupervised! Luckily, their shopping is too expensive or I'd have shards time controlling my impulse to buy more plants. What a selection! Christy, that'd be awesome if your friends had enough to spare. I'm familiar with the purple/mauve variety, so it'd probably be the better one to use, but I think all wandering Jews are similar, fast-growing, easy care, so either variety would be fine. I'd just be glad to have something. The nurseries around here are also all telling me they could've hooked me up a month ago, but they've cleaned out all their delicate plants to make room for bulbs. I might try a package of coleus seeds too, just to see. I think they're only a couple dollars.

If you have a sheltered spot of any kind, many of these will winter over with some if they're protected from overhead frost. They will lose their leaves but return in the spring. Last year, I left a newly rooted cutting of angel wing begonia on the carport and this spring, it sprouted from the root and made a huge plant. Many ferns will freeze to the ground and resprout in the spring, especially in the ground under live oak trees. My mandevilla got mealybug, wintering over cut back on an unheated porch; spring of 2004 I treated the mealy bug, planted it in the ground, mulched heavily in an open area and it came back from the roots this spring, to grow and bloom well. I see split leaf philodendrons growing on the south or east side of peoples homes under an overhang, flourishing. The 'philodendrons' if arrowhead vine, pointy and with white variegation will survive the winter in the ground. Pieces of the vine that touched the ground and broke off lived over the winter for me and sprouted out at the time undug caladiums came up. The poinsettia might make it to Christmas, in a protected spot away from street lights, and show you a blossom or two. Whatever isn't claimed, I would put in a protected spot, preferably on the south side of a building under an overhang and see what survives. If the temps get really, really low, protect with some sheets of bubble wrap if you don't have some row cover. Good Luck, Nell

@tiffany - lol, same here! Maybe Key West and a perfectly shaded porch so I don't have to run outside every few hours to move everyone around so they don't get sunburned :) I can dream, right ? And that link is very helpful! Right now I have a massive rainbow club moss just hanging out in there while I try to figure it what to do with her....(another "help me" post in the making). @karen - I can't tell you how much I appreciate your input. I fall in love and bring a plant home, spend a little time with it - then it drops a leaf or starts drooping and I get panicky as a new mother. And that's helpful about the alocasia because I think mine are moving toward that state. Should I leave them alone or prune later in the fall ? @jamila - you should totally get one! I hear they're easy care ;p

your plant is stressed ... you bought it today ... and brought it home ... i suspect what you see at home is different than the store.. due to the type of light it is/was observed in ... frankly.. i dont see any yellow leaves in this pic.. ergo .... if there are any.. it must be minor .. but lets be clear ... nothing happens in one day ... so i suspect it was previously stressed... either at the grower.. or the shipping to seller.. etc ... if it were grown in a greenhouse ... simply being moved from that perfect environment.. to a store.. is enough to cause minor issues .... just give it time to settle down.. its stressed.. not hungry.. fert is not a response ... water properly.. and give it a month or two to settle down ... and adjust to the light in your home ... i would not repot a stressed plant.. until i was sure its no longer stressed ... why add stress on top of stress ... BTW ... all white leaves are usually terminal ... with no chlorophyll .. they are of no use to the plant.. so the plant doesnt hang on to them very long .... so dont get too attached to them.. and hope you will get repeated shows relating to such ... and they will sunburn or scorch very fast in light that is too intense ... i see the cat is already eyeing it up ... put it where the cat cant get at it ... and avoid the issue completely ... ken
