My family room is 4 walls of paneling w/ built ins, all knotty pine. I think that Behr Cottage White works very well with it - it is what had I painted the ceiling. I recently painted 3 walls of those pine walls BM Simply White (which is actually a tad too white, not perfect) but left the ceiling Cottage White & really like the way the white walls have brought ought the color of the Cottage White, which harmonizes very well with the remaining knotty pine. It is a softly yellowish toned shade.

Looking at my stack of books on the shelf, I see that olive green, dull gold and certain shades of blue also look very good, but are on the darker side. If you want to see, I'll take and post a picture tomorrow.

I don't think you can go wrong using a soft white.

Okay, I took some pics of various colors with my knotty pine -- hoping that they photographed true! First is a shot of the wall and ceiling

I also found some Ben Moore color samples that I thought work well -- these were harder to photograph without glare, and they all came out looking alike (they are all soft sage, green-blue, blue, gray & gray-green) so here are the names -- perhaps you can look at them in a store: Wind Chime, Morning Dew, Tranquility, Crystalline, and Cloud White (which is a tiny bit on the gray side), Coventry Gray, Polar Sky.

I particularly like the first 4 (Wind Chime, Morning Dew, Tranquility and Crystalline)
