Balsamic vinegar: how to choose a brand?

I have bought several at Trader Joe’s which were ok but nothing special. I have a lot of recipes that call for it, but in the quantities used, it take a long time to go through a bottle, and I’d like it to a good one.

There are just so many brands out there. I was in Whole Foods the other day and there was a dizzying variety, at least 20 kinds, at all price points. I also have several high-end grocery stores nearby with a big selection. But I don’t know whether the price has much relationship to quality.

How to choose?

I’d be using much of it to add to a salad. We put olive oil on the salad every day. My husband then uses lemon juice on his, while I like a dash of red vinegar. A little bit of balsamic would add to that.

If there are better brands for cooking vs. salad, I’d get both of them.

Thanks for your recommendations.
