Any other Downton Abbey fans disappointed by this season?
Comments (22)I normally don't lurk on this side of Home Decorating, but I peeked in and saw this thread. It gives me a chance to vent about this series. I'm a die-hard Upstairs/Downstairs fan and I tried watching Downton Abbey when it first aired but did not enjoy it. Almost every scenario they came up with was done and done much better in Up/Dwnstrs. After saying this I continue to tune in now and then and am amazed at how the writers think that staff would be interacting with the upstairs as much as they do in this series. Maids being asked for and having their advice taken? Staff conversing and engaged with family members so casually? I don't think so. Besides, Richard is such a weak version of Mr. Bellamy. lol I do have one question for avid fans - who did Mary have her indiscretion with that caused all the scandal?...See MoreAny way to keep hawks from nesting in my yard?
Comments (80)I have a pocket of oak trees in my front yard that is home to many creatures. We had a hawk in our tree one year and that bird was such a messy, wasteful eater- dead birds and squirrels everywhere. I put up an eagle decoy and moved it around but it didn’t do much. The hawks moved to the neighbor across the street the next year. And then to the neighbor next door after that. IDK if it’s the same bird or maybe there’s more than one bird/family. They do flybys and hunt in my yard but they dont live in it anymore. I thoroughly enjoy watching this little microcosm of forest life...most times. The kids were yelling one day to come look at the window. A heron was in my little backyard pond and was eating my fish like it was a buffet....See MoreAnyone Else Been Watching Country Music Documentary on PBS?
Comments (73)The castigation can end over the wrong word choice. A quick word choice perhaps better replaced with something else. Let's call it an "annoying, unwanted nickname" that for whatever reason is disliked. Your name is Allison, you hate being called Ally, and your siblings do so when they want to annoy you. I think that's what's happened in this thread. I didn't make up the issue, it's there. I pointed out that it was odd for a local to use it. Those making a weak and childish effort to be annoying by insisting on finding multiple instances of use (that everyone knows about) are welcome to do so. It's not particularly clever but the word doesn't bother me. Call me Ally if you want. Like most people around here, I don't use "Frisco". If you want to, go ahead. What is annoying is people making an effort to be annoying....See MoreDid You Watch Watergate? Watching Now?
Comments (65)Someone on Hot Topics has posted a video of Sasha Baron Cohen accepting an award from the Anti-Defamation League. It's worth looking up. Cohen makes the point that lies and hatred are being spread far and wide by Facebook and Google -- unchecked -- as some sort of 'entertainment'. I agree with him that these for profit companies should be held to the same regulations as newspapers, broadcasters, magazines, movies, etc. NOT to disseminate fake news and foment hate. "Free Speech" has bounds. Journalism slid into this when it began presuming that *everything* has 'two sides'. No, not everything is 'debatable'. Facts do not have 'alternative meanings'. A pound IS 16 ounces, not some alternative number. Regarding this thread, President Trump DID withhold aid to Ukraine while demanding that Ukraine announce an investigation that he could use to smear his political rival. It is not "OK" to so abuse the office of the President, nor to use taxpayer money for personal profit....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
