I don't think cashmere is the proper fabric....velvet seems more on par? I agree there is enough sparkle, don't compete.

1929Spanish, I love the idea of the cashmere one (although I'd probably get black) and if I knew she'd wear it, I'd up my budget, but I don't want to spend that much not knowing if she would.

Partymusic - I don't think she's a fur type of gal, despite the glam of the dress, she's pretty casual and I think even a scarf type wrap might be pushing it. But thanks; it's cute, for sure.

Do you think she'll wear the same dress twice? It seems risky to buy something for a special dress she's already worn.

My DIL rents her evening gowns from some upscale service, just like men rent tuxedos.

I've loaned all my evening wraps to my DIL, as I used to go to black tie events when I was working. I gave her all of my evening purses because I had satin, velvet, jeweled, etc. and they were nice quality.

Back to that dress --- for winter, a velvet with a silk or satin lining is great. A substantial woven silk will also work. For warmer months, a sheer chiffon.

dyhgarden, yes, for what she spent on that dress, she'll wear it again - if another occasion as fancy as the ball she bought it for comes along. The ball was in another city so no one she knows but her boyfriend saw her in it. Our town isn't that swanky, but maybe she'd wear it to something fancy in Seattle or a gala here sometime. I did think about an evening bag, too, as an option.

I've looked at all the bigger stores that I can think of for wraps, Nordstrom, Saks, Neiman Marcus - but I'm thinking maybe one of those specialty stores that I get catalogs from, but whose names I can't remember now that I need to find them, might have something. Just hoping maybe someone would remember or see something that might work. Some of the stores above had some great things, but most that I loved were over $1k - and I'm not kidding!

I took a look at Neiman-Marcus with a search for shawls and saw some really pretty choices that were around $300. You said you looked there, so I guess you didn't like any of those choices?

Fun, It was the prices! Like I said, I don't want to spend that much on something she may never wear. I almost pulled the trigger on this one at Neiman - Marcus Last Call for around $60 - with $10 off for signing up....but I just couldn't tell if it was too casual, with the more open weave and fringe and all? - Cashmere, tho'. That’s the thing about a cashmere. She can use it double duty. I used to have one that had a woven paisley design in it. I wore it out.

I can envision a shimmery velvet wrap/scarf in a wine red, dark blue, violet or black - or any solid color, really. What colors does she favor - or that favor her?

This is labelled 'dark taupe' - almost looks like pink to me...

She's a redhead with a mane of gorgeous, long curly hair. It's a subdued red with blonde highlights and she doesn't have the freckly white complexion, although she is light skinned. Not sure silver was the best choice for her coloring (I would have had her pick navy or gold sequins/lame', but didn't want to rain on her parade). So that mauve color would not be flattering and I wish I knew what color she might like with the silver. Her eyes are blue, so blue would look great, but I see her mostly in black and gray, with a plum jacket sometimes. Plum might not be the best choice for the warmer seasons, tho, which is when I picture her actually using a wrap instead of a coat. So I think black is the safest choice. I do love the look of that velvet for sure. Thanks!

eta: JTL, that's a cool option, but I don't think the cream would go with the silver and I didn't see other colors. Nothing else jumped out at me, but maybe I missed it?

Cindy, she is the mother of my favorite person in the whole world, my grandson. Her mom died a few years ago, so I am the grandma now and she really, really appreciates me and the close bond I have with her son. She will never interfere with that, so I appreciate her a great deal, too!
