After you paint the trim you will be able to tell if it bugs you! My guess is even if it bugs you, it will not be that noticeable. When I painted my daughter's room Ballerina Pink, I quickly realized the existing white molding, which I had not intended on painting, looked AWFUL, I immediately had to paint all the trim a brighter white. Her plantation shutters still bug me.. but I didn't paint those!

Thanks for all the comments. First let me add that this staircase is not a focal point in the house. It is in the back of the house, and originally had a door at the bottom. busybee3 - Yes the rest of the trim in the house is white. Good point... mayflowers - Yes it is 3" board up there. All of the trim in the house is 2-piece (flat boards with base cap). Some of the original molding is taller. I was torn on painting it white or brown. I thought painting it the same as the stairs/landing would tie it together. So if I paint that white, then I would either have to paint that little triangle of stringer white, or have a little brown triangle there by the first step after the landing. justgotabme - Yes, I thought about painting the risers, but they were white before and I didn't like them. And I don't have a lot of time left to repaint them. We hope to wrap everything up and get the house listed next week.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Irene - thank you for sharing the pic. I fell in love with the trim and that's what we're going with. Elizabeth- once you mentioned too modern not to have casing, I looked at it from that viewpoint and I agree. Girl: the reason for deep sill is probably an added layer of insulation, as is the case with my room. Ours is a split-level ranch, and this new bedroom was previously a double integral garage. The windows are where the garage doors used to be. Once we studded out the walls and added a thick layer of insulation, the result is these deep set windows. I personally love it because any extra space for more plants is a plus in my book! This reno allowed us to create a large 4th bedroom, and a nice size mudroom/laundry room on the other side of the bedroom wall. I'm very excited :)

The doors and knobs are dating the house. If it's in the budget, it might save you time and effort to replace the doors with a different style in a pre-painted door. Lever handles would also update the look. Then you would have to paint the trim to match. However, wood products are one of things affected by COVID shortages and price increases, so if you do decide to replace the doors, it might pay to wait a year. While gray is going out, you have an overabundance of beige which is also dating the house. So as not to break the bank maybe selectively replace some of the beige flooring? Before doing anything, try to develop an overall plan for your update. Even if you spread the work and/or expense over a couple years, an overall plan will yield a more satisfactory, cohesive result.
