I hear you.

I used to have a small niche by the furnace. With everything piled high on top of one another I had to be very careful of placement of stuff. I bought the largest bins I could for garlands so they wouldn't get crushed but that left no space for maneuvering around. I'd have to pull everything out and remember to put it back in order of need. DH never does it that way so I'd dig.

Maybe if you have room you could opt for large containers for your bulky crushable stuff. Also in one room I had shelves put in up high for storage. It helped with making room for seldom used stuff.

Now in the new place things are piled but there's room at least to move around. Hurray!

What makes decorating easier is drawing a paycheck for it! :)

I was working in the retail side of a nursery before retiring. We had decorations for our own use and for sale. It was just beautiful and spending all day there it was easy to cut back on my own decorating. We don't do much anymore.

For me it was getting a fiber optic tree I could put on a table (so the dog couldn't get to it)

A friend of mine has a Christmas closet too. Oh, to have such a thing. I have to crawl up into the attic. Yuk!

I too have to climb up into the crawl space to get out decorations. Don't have as many as I did years ago though. I just got some things out today. I did buy a new wreath for the front door this year.

I have a place in my basement, near my furnace. It has shelves and everything is all there together.

You know I've been meaning to get something with wheels to put my artificial tree on too. I keep thinking one of those things that a person puts heavy planters or pots on, they have casters. Every year I forget to look for one.I take all the ornaments off but leave on the beaded garlands and the star, and the string of lights. You're right, it's so much easier.

My cellar is not a good place for storage except for outdoor items. It has a dirt and gravel floor and can still get musty even with the dehumidifier. Plus no inside entrance, have to go outside and around the house to the cellar door. I used to keep my decorations in the garage, but as I got older I hated dragging everything up the porch steps and into the house. Again, no direct door from garage to inside the house.

I would love to have a decor closet. This house has decent storage, but you have to go up a ladder or through a crawlspace to access the areas...impossible for me to do carrying containers of decor. The last few years, I've been storing some in my extra bedroom/home office which now resembles a giant closet. I have to keep the door closed when people visit...not ideal.

I love seasonal decorations -- Christmas, of course, being the best time of year and having the most decorations! I've been thinking about this topic lately. The above two comments incorporate the majority of my thoughts, but I'll throw in a few details:

- I've been collecting plastic bins (all the same name brand /same size -- big enough, but small enough I can tote them easily) in different colors: red /green lids for Christmas ... orange /brown lids for Halloween and Thanksgiving ... pink for Valentine's Day ... baby blue for Easter and spring ... red /blue lids for Independence Day ... turquoise for birthday items. Right now they're in my attic (hard to get in /out), but when we build and I have my new closet, I'll have shelves built for these same-sized plastic bins -- that'll allow them to nest compactly.

- I need to add plastic wreath containers. Since these pretty much only come in red, I'll need a system to label them by season.

- I am seriously thinking of giving up my BIG Christmas tree. I'm thinking that in our new house I'll go with several smaller trees -- I think I like those skinny trees in the 6' tall range, and I could imagine a number of tabletop trees throughout the house. Even with smaller trees, I'm very interested in those rolling tree stands (I want the ones that have a tree skirt that "pulls up" and zips, protecting the tree and decorations.

- I'm thinking that if I give up the BIG tree, I'll add more garlands. I made one this year, and it was SO EASY and cheap.

- This is a little off-topic, but I am paying a great deal of attention to location of outlets for lights.

I have a Texas basement... a walk-in floored attic. It's the one modification we made to the house after it was built. I don't leave the tree up. It's nice to have a place to store it and other things.

So true. Storage easily accessed would be wonderful.

I have Harry Potter's room under my stairs. It is a puzzle to get it all in and once it comes out there is no going back. So far the 12 hour blitz decorating is doable but I can see how it will one day need to be spread over a few days. Luckily I have an unused ping pong table right outside the door of the storage compartment. It's nice to keep the mess downstairs while in progress, for the most part.

I went totally the other way. Tree is gone. Kept only a few ornaments and decorations. Did not put one up last year. Will not be here this year. I have one storage bin full in the garage. I told Charlotte she can use whatever she wants, and decorate to her hearts content. Usually I wait till after the 16th anyway, cause my daughters birthday comes first.

I scaled down from what I used to do, but still do what I can handle. It looks so festive and cheers me up.

My daughter's birthday is on the 27th of December. How we made it special when she was growing up was we covered the tree with a decorative table cloth and attached balloons to it. All Christmas stuff was removed otherwise and the most birthday looking theme was put in its place.
