Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my rubber tree?

Hi! My rubber tree has had many of the lower leaves fall off and die. All of the leaves that have fallen off turn a slight yellow color with brown dry spots. The plant looks fairly full in the photo, but about 6-8 leaves have fallen off since I bought it a few months ago. It has put out about 2-3 new leaves since I've had it. This plant is about 6 ft away from a SW facing window and I only water when the soil is fairly dry - probably once every 3 weeks or so. It does not require much water as far as I can tell. Please help! I'm not sure if this is some kind of disease or what it could be. Thanks!! Here are photos:

Looks like normal acclimation. Its getting used to its new light level and will loose some leaves in the process. This can go on for several months. As long as there are signs of new growth, there is no need to worry.

Keep the soil slightly moist- allowing the top to dry just a bit. Do not keep the soil wet, don't let it dry out completely either. Give the plant bright light- but acclimate it to sun if giving more than dappled sun light. Keep it as warm as possible.

hi & thank you both for your responses. i do not own a cat so thats ruled out. I have other plants that are planted in an organic soil type thing which on the bag states is a mix of "compost bark, sphagnum peat moss, pasteurized poultry litter, and an organic wetting agent" that are doing quite well. do you think i should replant these 2 in this type of soil? the room my plants are in is approx 16x18 and the only source of natural light is through my sliding patio doors. the room temp is at a constant 65 degrees Fahrenheit. i dont know what could be causing those burn marks on the leaves of my janet craig, its kept in a low lighted corner. the pot that the pachira is in is 7"tall x 6"diameter, the tree itself is 13.5" tall from the soil line to the top most leaf.

Without seeing it, I can't say! It could be so many things, even damage from the builders. (You said you live in a new house.) And there is Fusiform rust being found in loblolly pines. I think that you need to contact the Harris County Master Gardeners. They might have a suggestion, and it doesn't cost you anything.

Unfortunately I think you're right, everything I've searched for so far points to herbicide damage. It's completely my own fault too I think. I thought I was careful and and was avoiding drift. Thanks for the sites though they're really helpful. I still can't figure out if my plants are salvageable or if I should tear them out and plant new. I don't want to keep growing them if they've been permanently damaged or unsafe to consume.

I'm not really sure what kind of peony you have but you can always bring a picture of it to your local nursery. They will be able to help you identify it. As for whether or not something is wrong with your peony, your peony looks okay to me. Sometimes when it's too hot and there is no rain, the buds may shrivel up. This has happened to me many times, I end up picking the buds off and my peony is okay the following year. I would try to clear the area around your peonies. There seems to be a lot of little plants growing inside and around the stems. When there isn't enough air circulation, peonies can develop gray mold or bortrytis. I would then try to clear away some of the dirt around the stems. Peonies should not be planted more than 2 inches deep. Otherwise, they won't flower. I would add some bonemeal or Neptune's Sea Harvest around each of the peony plants. Stay away from the artificial type fertilizers, they can do more damage than good. Lastly, get some peony rings to support the leaves. I wouldn't cut the leaves off unless there was a disease. Peonies, like other plants, need their leaves to photosynthesize food in order to develop a strong root system. Peonies are hardy plants and can live for up to a 100 years given they are planted in the right conditions. Good luck!

It’s normal to lose some of the lower leaves - they age out, or they get shaded out and the plant sheds them as they no longer do enough photosynthesis. Usually the rate of loss is less than the rate of replacement by new leaves but it sounds like you’re losing more than that.

Maybe watering every three weeks is not enough, you may be stressing your plant too much. Of course it depends on the plant the soil the season the pot size etc etc, but my one dries down in 7-10 days and then I water it thoroughly and drain it well. Then wait again to dry down, as judged by the weight of the pot and/or whether a skewer inserted down to the bottom shows moisture.

Read up on soils and watering on this forum, I think that’ll help. Don’t think it’s a disease. Could be rootbound though, looks a small pot for its size. Which will make it go through water faster too. I agree give it bright light.

It's too dry that make the plant slowing down it's metabolism, reduce leaves and/or grow slowly.
