WANTED: Bubble or plain envelop? Is it worth the money?
Comments (11)Plain paper envelopes have to be no more than 1/4 inch thick. The USPS has a template they use to see if your envelope will easily slide through. As long as there is padding and the seeds are protected I agree--$.65 is a better price. For thinner packing material with the same protection try cut up styrofoam meat trays or styrofoam plates. Use two pieces and tape the seeds flat between them. This helps you keep under the 1/4" requirement. Every time I take a bubble envelope to the post office it's $1.95. If I mail it myself I can put 2 or 3 stamps on it like the last post. If anyone uses flat rate boxes I recommend Click-N-Ship on the internet. The box is the same amount, but you get the tracking number for free. If I mail it downtown I have to pay more for the tracking number. If you use Click-N-Ship be sure to enter the correct date. If you're mailing the same day make sure the package gets to the mail that day. They can reject it otherwise. I would say most of us would accept seeds either bubble envelope or padded envelope as long as the seeds arrive safe. I traded for 2 years and thought a lot like you--until I received smashed seeds. They were something I really, really wanted to grow and they were toast. Other suggestions: Write the words HAND CANCEL under the stamps in the right corner. Use a dark or red permanent marker. You're doing everything you can to avoid the nasty automatic sorting machines that smash the seeds. Along the bottom of the envelope under the address write Seeds--example: Mr. Smith 123 Elm Street New Alpha, NX 89340 SEEDS-----SEEDS------SEEDS I like to use a pen or green marker. I like to tell myself the person handling my mail will use a little more TLC if they know it's seeds (and don't think I'm trying to send explosives through the mail). Never use duct tape-bombers use duct tape and the USPS may open and inspect your package. When you package your seeds into small baggies or envelopes it may be prudent to get a slightly larger baggie so the seeds can lay flat. They may fit in a tiny bag, but they may be bulkier....See MoreThe Green Dragon Amaryllis
Comments (13)Thanks for the pictures. Those are the pictures I have seen in the ads and online. So it is THAT green. They remind me of a Granny Smith Apple:). That is the green I like. I have seen the EverGreen one in a catalog I have and it is ALL green, but each bulb is $27 with shipping! The Green Dragon is not far behind in price, but it is a much bigger flower. But now that I think of it, the Green Dragon wont grow a second year, or forever in the south Fla. heat/sun will it? I just thought of that. Or am I wrong? Is it like the 'Christmas' amaryllis bulbs that give you a giant stalk or two of flowers, then thats it, it dies off in spring as soon as the heat hits? IF you live where it is to hot the Green Dragon is a one shot grower/bloomer...or am I wrong? The Evergreen looks like it would be like A Papilio type, that is evergren and grows all year, even in the Fla. heat. Is that right? I can only get one. Which do I buy? I grow the Papilios with ease, and they bloom all the time. But the Green Dragon looks like the 'Christmas' type amaryllis, that you buy for like $5 now at Lowes, and it blooms great for Christmas, and then thats it for south Fla. and other hot climates. The only amaryllis I see in the ground here in Ft.Lauderdale, let alone in pots, is a small red one, that blooms in the spring, with white stripes, and then the Papilios. Should I go for the Dragon or the EverGreen?...See MoreDragon Fire, just another green hosta??
Comments (13)Welcome Starina! I live in Greece. My favorite place to buy hostas is Sara's in Brockport, which is where I got Dragon Fire. My other favorite place is Wayside Garden Center in Palmyra (not affiliated with Wayside catalog or on-line). This is a 54 mile round trip from my house, but worth it! Their selection seemed better last year. They tend to be a bit less expensive than Sara', but no one can beat Sara's for selection. I also have found unusual varieties at Green Acre, Van Putte and Green Acre, but they have way less of a selection. I also find nice deals at Garden Factory sometimes...if not, then I make a right onto Buffalo road, and another right onto rt 531...and then stop at Sara's! Happy shopping!...See MorePoohBear Blue Dragon
Comments (54)I must disagree, Rosie. Those primrose sold in groceries and box stores in spring are perfectly happy planted out and come back year after year here in northern Michigan - I buy some to add to the garden every year where they not only grow but often rebloom for me if we get a spell of cool weather in early summer or even in early autumn. I can't see why they shouldn't grow well for you there at the bottom of the state. The trick for me is keeping the terrible peat they always come potted in sufficiently moist to keep from killing them by repeated drying and wilting until it is warm enough to transplant them outdoors! (Which is exactly why my AV's are on wicks!!)...See MorePoohBearLvr
