WS ideas: new place, new garden
Comments (4)Jenfee, we have a similar yard set up (well, we did. A tornado took out a lot of our trees :) - as you have but our front yard is larger... We have a front yard vegetable garden. It is set up to look similar to a community garden in organized, raised beds and containers. It was unique to the neighborhood but now many of my friends here are doing something similar because of shady backyard situations. The other half of our front yard will be more ornamental. For shrubs I am planting blueberries, figs, pineapple guavas. Vines will be bean poles, then there will be tomatoes both vining and bush. For smaller plants and borders there will be thyme, little greek basils, peanuts, mixed with things like nasturtiums, johnny jump ups, calendula and other edible flowers. This area is contained in raised beds with "urbanite" (because I have it) broken concrete stacked to look like stone in curved beds. I just threw in lagsana stuff behind those in a winter and then planted my winter sown stuff in there in spring. Have to start again since trees squashed it all, but it did look pretty darned good! Comments (5)Hi Mami! What part of FL do you live? Does the low area hold water? How much sun do these areas get? What type of trees are around the fence? What do you envision other than a gazebo on the right? Are there types of gardens you prefer(butterfly, annuals, shade, tropical, cottage, veggie, etc)? Is that a deck with a seating area to be? I agree with Carol about the hardscape, gazebo, and the trees first. Things won't grow well on that slope, but what a great opportunity for a little terrace garden filled with good dirt for anything flowering/veggie you'd like to grow. You could even make the deck by the house your place for pretty potted plants/flowers if there is a hose bib nearby, and you will be inclined to water them. It would be nice to have color there you can view from inside the house. Vines I find carefree (I imagine with 3 kids this is a requirement) are coral honeysuckle, and depending on your zone, queen's wreath. Again, confederate jasmine depending on your zone. Other than that, vines can be a lot of work. Don't know about climbing roses- rose enthusiasts will have to chime in on ones that will do well in your zone and don't need spraying. Maybe ones with few thorns (?lady banks rose?). Please give us more info so we can give you better suggestions! Anna...See MoreA new reno, a new floorplan? Ideas or suggestions, please.
Comments (2)Oops! Those are small windows, high on the wall. They are maybe 7 ft off the ground and short vertically but long horizontally. It would be great to keep them as they are the only windows in the BR. They can't be made taller like a standard window because of a roofline on the other side of that exterior wall....See Morenew house/new kitchen ideas needed
Comments (2)Are you doing a gut remodel? If you post a 2D measured plan, people can help with layout ideas. That cooktop/oven location is pretty much the worst imaginable. No landing area on the left, teeny landing area on the right, in the traffic pattern to the sliding door, and next to seating....See More
