Design Dilemma Before & After Fireplaces

Are there any linear fireplaces out there that don't throw out a ton of heat? I've seen stories where people purchased a linear fireplace and it threw so much heat that they didn't use it that often. I don't want to make a big mistake.

Any advice would be appreciated!

The Majestic brand has heat management systems. Click on the part that says "manage my heat." I am in the process of having installed the Echelon I direct vent with two heat management systems that remove 50% (25% each). It's an extra $400 per heat management system, but worth it to be able to use the heat throughout the house and enjoy the ambiance. Other brands may have it too. The heat management systems are in addition to the regular venting that all direct vent gas fireplaces will need. Fortunately i had gotten a new furnace that vented differently from the old one and I was able to use the abandoned vent path with new ductwork that went through the roof in place of the old, so no new holes in the roof.

And are linear fireplaces on their way out or here to stay? I don't want to do a renovation and have it look dated already.

They are either gas or electric, and yes they give off a ton of heat, and it must be on LOWEST ember glow to avoid that. Call a specialty shop in your area on SITE. and do not buy a damn thing online.

Napoleon makes OK fireplaces, but their efficiencies are terrible. The P4 Energuide efficiencies of their Luxuria Series of linears range from a low of 38.8% to 52.5% Which means that in the case of the LV38N 61% of the gas you pay for is wasted and the best LV74N almost half is wasted. The Valor Linears range from 66 to 70% P4 Energuide efficiencies. The Heat Shift allows TVs and other heat sensitive items above the fireplace as well as combustible wall materials up to the fireplace opening. Here is the Heat Shift Video.

Thank you, Jeffrey! I needed input that is specific to linear units, so that is very helpful. I am actually having a hard time finding a showroom with this model. I live in a rural area so will do research on nearby metro areas that may have one. My other issue is that I think the flames cannot be adjusted higher or lower like a standard unit. With our current Heat n Glo (I believe it is a 8000 CLX) we can adjust the flame height which also helps us manage the heat output. And I am limited to this brand due to the the availability of products in my area. My husband really wants a linear unit because our new house will have a more contemporary style, but I feel I can accomplish a contemporary look for a standard fireplace by thoughtful use of architectural/design elements. It is frustrating trying to get all the facts so I can make a good decision for our needs. Thanks again!

How to choose gas linear fireplace brand?

Linear, as it was explained to me, means the "rectangular" shape, instead of the almost square shape of traditional angles. That is, the fireplace is wider than taller. I kept researching and so far I'm leaning towards the Regency New York. I like that they come with a double glass, which makes the outer glass not super hot (thus safer). That means I don't need a screen, which I don't think look very nice. But I learned that there is a fan that blows air between the glasses, to cool it down, so I'm a bit concerned about how loud that fan might be. I need to go back to a store and listen to it, again. I wasn't paying attention when I last visited. Does anyone know about this brand/model?

Most linear fireplaces we sell feature remotes that handle your comfort needs, so you can set them to a certain temperature.

Talk to your local retailer about fireplaces with heat control features. Travis Industries and Valor Fireplaces are great brands to consider and are widely available.

Definitely talk with a local retailer. Some of them have features that can direct 25 - 50% of the heat to your furnace (with ducting of course) and your existing HVAC system can circulate the heat throughout the entire house.

Go. To a Local. and Reputable. Seller : ) Have then come to your home. Every situation is different. Six trips to get this.........gas. Almost ALL of them need straight up, venting.

@Shre J Love it! I crank it up every cold evening. it also has a light feature that I can turn on without the flame on warmer days for ambiance.

The trickiest thing was finding a heat resistant material for the upper part since I didn't want to run the tile that far up. I finally found a very cost effective cement panel option.

The electric ones don’t put out much heat when on and you can leave the heat off and just have the flames. We installed one in our cottage and are in the process of doing another. Great option if you’re just looking for ambiance rather than as a heat source.

@Shre J I got my cement panels from this company https://cementboardfabricators.com/

They were very easy to work with and the panels were cut to our specs or they will send you the proper saw blade to cut them yourself. The panels were very reasonable, the shipping was more than the product as they are very heavy and packed to ensure no damage i.e. in a shipping crate. That was five years ago, so who knows what's happening now.

I love my electric fireplace that I bought ONLINE. You can turn the heat fan on to blow hot air into the room, or leave it off.
