Design Dilemma Fireplaces living room

We are considering buying this 90's era home. The home is in the mountains but does not possess any mountain vibe. Any ideas of what to do with this fireplace to make it updated and more rustic. I dislike the gold tones on the insert. Can those be painted over or is it better to replace the insert. I was thinking of some floor to ceiling stone around it? Also what would you do as an alternative to the dated vertical blinds? There are great mountain and pine views outside the window.

I'm not a fan of a corner fireplace. It is awkward - but if you keep it, you can definitely paint out the gold and make it more of a showpiece. It looks like the layout of the room was a bit designed for this fireplace given the shape of the wall. Given the environment you are in, I would want to have stone or something to add warmth and bring out the mountain vibe.

I agree about the vertical blinds I also think the curved windows are dated and it looks like that is an interior overlay, not this window itself - but hard to tell from here. If you can remove the curved overlay, that is ideal and then I would hang panels. If you cannot, I would want to disguise that a bit. Here are some pics in Houzz that I think would work. You either can roman blind across with panels in between or at either end.

This is the exterior of the home.

I was thinking of painting it a tan adobe color.

carol-well I CAN get to Canada from here quite easily...but I think it'd be easier travel with a snowmobile and that I do not have. ;) In our last home we had a fireplace in the corner and the TV on the adjacent wall with a sectional very similar to redroze. It did work out well but I think redroze's dimensions and your own being more square would make it all the better. Our 'TV' wall was much longer than the fireplace wall. I know that putting it in the corner does eat up more room and that is one negative but in our case it made the most sense and I really liked it. I felt like you could very comfortably watch the TV and get the warmth from the fireplace ("my" seat was of course the closest one to it). The TV wasn't massive and really didn't 'steal the show'. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of the fireplace and the tv in one frame and we have moved on from there. I like Senai01's window seat pic - that is awesome. Too bad your window is too far removed, that would really work well otherwise.

Hi Annie, Thanks for your thoughts. Your opinion is valued. Just to clarify, the TV would be in a cabinet a bit like the one below, but with wood painted cabinet in a lighter colour. We are planning on a much smaller TV than pictured too. The electricity and other wires for the TV would go through the floor from the basement below (floor plugs). Powering the TV is not really a challenge, and nor is cord control with the right designed cabinet. My youngest is 8. In general I am striving for a practical design where some seating can see the fireplace and some the TV. We hope to rework a few other versions. Hopefully you will come back and let me know if you like any other other versions better. Is there anything else you dislike about the latest design after my clarification? Thanks, Elaine! Well, the kitchen is done in the same paneling so we wanted the rooms to flow together. The cabinets, backsplash, and counters in the kitchen are all done in shades of white, so to whitewash both rooms would result in too much white in the kitchen. We can't place the TV next to the fireplace because there are windows on each side. I was trying to keep the lodge or farmhouse feel, which is why we didn't drywall it when we moved it.

This is the house we are moving into. I am trying to start planning how to place furniture as it is somewhat awkward. Ideas welcome, also any advice on how to update this fireplace, take off the white trim? Paint it black? I will be adding more modern black lightning and hardware as well. Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can paint over the brass with black Rustoleum paint -- ask for fireplace appropriate types. Agree that for a more rustic look I'd be removing the wooden surround and adding stone.

Window, if possible, can we move the pole higher as much as we can? pattern printed cotton, or shiny as silk is also looked stunning.

Agreed, you should bring more of the outdoor in. Floor to ceiling stone with a floating mantel would make a nice focal point.
