Alrighty... I have been to JC Penny's (and a dz other stores) and am having trouble finding the right shade of grey. BUT- I have had no trouble finding blues!!!!! Would it be possible to bring blue into this room with window treatments and maybe a rug? These WT are from JC Penny's... they are not the right length, I just brought them home for color. It's a blue/grey... WDYT? Wide, just so you can see the color. and here they are more "closed" which is how I would hang them. I'm a little concerned they look "random"... like, where did I get the blue from? Thoughts? Also- we got our triple dresser. And *shudder* we got a new TV. We are not a big TV family (in fact, we just went from 1 TV to 2) but I like to watch the news as I get ready.... I know, I know... many of you are cringing. So am I. Until I get to watch the Today Show in the morning... I am feeling much more informed! ;) It's a beast. I also got a cute little (faux) orchid on clearence at Target. WDYT? How else do I decorate this wall (this is opposite the bed.)

Central fireplaces in long rooms are a challenge for decorating: If you make the fireplace a focal point, the two spaces on the end aren't really big enough to be useful; two seating area and you feel like you aren't using the fireplace to its best advantage; and three seating areas like you have feels a bit cramped. Personally, I would probably take it down to two seating areas and pull the two big chair into the living area with the sofa. If you stick with the three areas, I'd probably turn the chairs to face the fireplace. Your space reads "lodge" to me with all the wood. Lodge decorating schemes have a vernacular all their own, so something that would look dated in another house looks perfectly fine here. Your dining room lighting in a suburban tract home would look like a holdover from a misguided foray into faux Tuscan; in this setting they look like, "Oh, see how they chose chandeliers that kind of look like twigs to reinforce the rustic look." A lot of your furnishings look like they could be antiques (whether they are or not). It comes off as a conscious choice to embrace old-fashioned decor. That isn't the same as dated, which looks like it happened accidentally just because you haven't changed anything in 30 years. (Even if the latter is true, it doesn't look that way0. The road from lodge to coastal is long and expensive, and would involve changing the fundamental character of the house. IMO, it's never a good idea to fight the fundamental character of the house. Once you've decided on your layout, I'd start with rugs for the sofa group and the dining room. If you go with three areas, I might use rugs for the areas on the end and forego the rug in the center area. You can use the rugs to lighten up the space and obscure some of the wood.

Thanks Beverly. My calculus teacher used to say that "you can't tell the riders from the horses without pictures" - in this case scaled drawings. I don't have the room layout drawn to scale, so here's a couple of pictures that may help. Looking into room from behind columns. Room is approximately 21' x 17' (window wall to columns) Tape indicates about where a 12 x 15 rug would land - about 2-1/2' from wall Opposite diagonal corner with tape showing where the 12x15 would end up. It's about 28" from column. While this room is slightly larger (and elegant!), and doesn't need the pathway for the Master BR, the relative positions of the furniture is my goal. Note the sofa table and chair behind the sofa, but not on the rug - I would like to have a table and chair and don't care if they're on the rug or not. My preference is to have all the furniture on the rug. Is that enough info to help determine an appropriate size? I can try to draw out a room layout with walls and dimensions, just ran out of day today.

I prefer the first set up and just make sure tv wall is well balanced and interesting. Add add a large coffee, then only one side table will be needed and place a floor lamp at end near fireplace. Two single chairs facing fireplace for better conversation and so seating is not all lined up. If space allowed and they are open to buying a sectional, see below. Is tv too large to go over fireplace and open to that idea? They could add bookcases or cabinets to create a great focal wall. On wall facing sectional, add a console table and art. Inspiration pictures are random decor wise but thought visuals might help in regards to concepts.
