My Baby Plants are Waking Up - When to Transplant?
Comments (6)Tulipsmiles, usually for tiny plants just bought you need to let them develop some roots before you put them in the ground. There is a very good chance your plants are in a peatmoss mix & roots do not fill the pot. They have hardly any roots right now. They will have a much better start if you put them in a gallon container & let them grow for a good part of the summer & plant them in the ground late summer. On the other hand there is no rule you can't plant in the ground but you will need to take good care of them & don't expect much from them. They will be slow starting out. I have done it both ways. The choice it yours....See MoreWhen to wake up?
Comments (5)I woke mine up in the middle of January. I planted 283 tubers in flats in order to take cuttings. I took my first cutting on 2/19 and so far have taken 73. I only cut buds from 45 tubers, but this was my first year trying to over-winter tubers so I don't feel too bad. I also just received my new Swan Island tubers, and planted them yesterday in the flats. Almost all have visible eyes, and some even have sprouts. Of the 21 varieties I stored, 5 didn't eye up...probably due to my lack of skill at dividing tubers. I believe I didn't leave enough material for eyes to form. Most that have produced had sprouts by the end of February (e.g. 6 weeks.) The longest to sprout was Outta Da Blue, which has taken 8 weeks and the first sprout is still only 1/2" long. So, if you're planning for the first week in May, I'd say you could go ahead and get them started inside now if you have the space. Cheers, Russ...See MoreWhen do you plan on waking you plumies up?
Comments (22)I begin regular watering when I take them out of storage. I'll give my plumies a bit of water during dormancy, maybe once every 4-6 weeks just to keep the roots hydrated. I keep them in a cool area so the soil doesn't dry out that fast. The dormant plumies in the greenhouse get more water because it's warmer and the soil dries out faster. They also get wet while I'm watering everything else if I use a hose but I've never had a problem with rot. This year I'm storing some plumies bare root. I have the rootball wrapped and I keep the wrapping moist. I guess I'll see if this method has worked when I repot them in a few weeks. I'm afraid that the roots of some might have dried out while I was out of town. I forgot to tell DH to moisten the wrapped roots so some were probably dry for almost 2 weeks....See Morewhat do you do when you are hungry and...
Comments (10)I offer them some of what I'm having ! :-) Even though a lot of them don't speak much English (and I don't speak much Spanish), they generally understand "would you like some of this?" in sign language. Obviously I only offer it if they are taking a break, and I don't feel that I HAVE to offer anything ... but the occasional dozen Krispy Kremes has certainly bought me a lot of goodwill ! My house is so small that I can't but help run into them frequently during the workday if I am home. I am sure they would understand if you just want to run in and get a quick snack. Regarding going to the bathroom ... hmm, I am a little more cautious there. Has something to do with the bathroom having no drywall or doors yet, and the fact that they are working on the waste lines. Wouldn't want them to get any sort of nasty shock. If I feel the need for the bathroom, I either take the dog for a walk to the park and use the conveniences there (only a block away), or wander down the street to the local coffee shop. And get coffee too ;-)...See More- 8 years ago
