Should I do more than just a hedge row?
Comments (12)OK, 5 hours later and step one is done. FYI I watered this am, used a shovel to slice around the roots, a truck to pull the stumps out and a golden retriever to collect all the golf balls I found. I also took the opportunity to remove all of the vine roots that were planted by the previous owner. The wall was covered in vines and upstairs inside was covered in carpenter ants. I've got two days to complete this project and I still have not decided on what plants to use. I do like the suggestion for nandina around the bay windows... maybe 5 total? One in front of each window and three along the front? That leaves the garage column, the left side of the kitchen window, and aaaaaallllll that space between the window and the downspout. Any thoughts? Thanks!...See MoreWhat can we do to make brick retaining walls and columns match facade?
Comments (7)We took a walk through the neighborhood this past weekend , and I finally figured out why the rock wall is there (sort of). Almost all the homes have some sort of rock wall formation on their property, and I believe it’s because the neighborhood is built on a mountain top, so the various builders all seemed to have utilized in some form or fashion all the rock that was excavated during the building process. I think once we find a solution for the red brick, the wall won’t be as big of an eyesore and flow a little better with the lot and the neighborhood. And agree absolutely about the landscaping! We’re working on it now!...See MoreShould we add drywall on top of this brick wall or keep the brick wall
Comments (13)Leave both the cabinets and the brick. Yours looks better than the picture with the white. If you are determined to do something with the brick, then, no solid color paint, use a paint wash, so it still looks like brick, not flat painted brick....See MoreWhat color should we paint the column? It is currently red.
Comments (14)That isn’t a column, it’s a tall, skinny wall. I endorse Ida’s suggestion that you paint it the wall color. As for the fireplace, I would demolish it and start over. The extreme difference between the low fireplace opening and the tall ceilings is very odd; the fireplace almost looks like a bread oven in an old kitchen. This is your chance to make the fireplace a focal point instead of a “what’s that” feature. If you have no experience with home renovation I would definitely consult a designer or even an architectural student for help. Your new home has a wonderful, clean, modern and open feel. Congratulations on your purchase and good luck with the move....See MoreKim in PL (SoCal zone 10/Sunset 24)
