This is a great thread. We're not remodeling but building a new house, and man, can I relate to a lot of these. ...you know every lighting fixture, faucet, sink, appliance by memory because you have endlessly researched each one. you freak out your own GC because you can discuss minute details about your house/kitchen from memory down to the 1/8". you have more e-mails from your GC/subs than you do from your friends. you wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat about some critical detail and then go downstairs to e-mail your GC about it right at the moment before you forget.

Indeed, acquiring the love of reading is quite a mystery to me too; especially when some siblings raised in the same family with the same exposures either 'get the bug' or they don't. Both of my parents, all of my grandparents, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. were readers. The older of my two brothers and I turned out to be readers, but my brother just two years my senior was never much of a reader. My younger son is not a reader either, unless he has some practical purpose, such as studying manuals. Those he really relishes. One thing about both my brother and my younger son, though, is they are exceptionally good listeners. Our older brother (nearly six and eight years older) read a lot out loud, ostensibly to me, but it was brother #2 who remembers what was read much better than I do. He knows a great amount of many classics, although he never read them himself. Same with my younger son...he wouldn't allow me to read to him, but he 'eavesdropped' when I read to his brother. Vee, that's my understanding: your 'A' Level is roughly equivalent to the American first year of college. Something I didn't mention above is the SAT or ACT (acronyms) that American students who intend to go to college/univ usually sit for when they are high school seniors (12th grade, the last year). It's in two parts (math skills and language skills), and each takes several hours...maybe three each -- it's been forty-six years since I took the SAT so I'm fuzzy. It's supposed to measure how well a student is predicted to do in their university courses. There's much controversy about whether it actually means much in the long run, but it continues to be used as some sort of measurement of students' abilities. I did quite well on the SAT, but I've always suspected it was because I was good at taking tests. I actually did better on the math part than the language part, which shocked and confused me.

We served in missions, in Mexico (mostly in rural areas) for nearly 14 years. Out in the hills, the indigenous people highly esteem armadillo meat. So much so, that they have hounds dedicated to hunting them. When they catch them, they often smoke the meat and sell it, going door to door. The meat sold for so much, that we could never afford to try it. But... I remembered.... When we came to Oklahoma, that was one of my goals, "I gotta get me one of THESE!" It turns out that an armadillo has a very good amount of meat, for its size. And, the meat is really good. I can't process every one that I kill, only those I kill when I have time to process the meat. Then, I save the meat for a special occasion. Last summer I took some to my son, in Seattle. Last week he told me he had just made "armadillo in red mole." My mentor, Mr. Mauser, grew up in in a time when mothers put a 22 into the hands of their ten year old son and said "Get me some meat for dinner." He taught me to process lots of wild meat. Since coming to Oklahoma, I have cut way back on wild meat, other than venison, an occasional squirrel, a trespassing rabbit, or armadillo. I do armadillo because I get so much meat for the work and the quality is so good. George
