Freezer surprise

last modified: 8 years ago

For the first time in our long marriage together, DH and I have plans to exit New England for warmer weather south and are trying to work through our stash of frozen food.

He's an engineer, and has a plan for how to tell if our power was off long enough to unfreeze and refreeze food thus putting us at risk for food poisoning. He said he'll put a container of water in the freezer, let the water freeze, then put a quarter on top of the frozen water. If we come home and the quarter is at the bottom of the container - even if frozen - then we know to toss the whole contents of the freezer. (If the quarter is in the middle of the container then we have to make a decision he says).

But I digress - we have unidentifiable objects in our freezer that apparently were too good to toss. I really try hard to label leftovers but sometimes I fail. So I have 3 mystery containers thawing.

Have any of you done something like that???
