8ft or 10ft ceiling?
Comments (27)If you've never been in a room that was badly proportioned due to too-high ceilings, you may not really believe there is such a thing. But there is, and it feels awful. Just very wrong -- but hard to put your finger on why. As a general rule, 9' is safe and comfortable for just about any room size. Higher ceilings can be are nice in large rooms; and 8' ceilings are wonderful for cozier spaces. One trick we've learned in this house is that a small area with lower ceilings at the entry to a larger space really 'opens up' the room with 8' ceilings. Our downstairs hallway has 7'6" ceilings, which we thought was a problem until we lived there a while. But now the 8' ceilings in the kitchen and den at either end feel much nicer, and the 'transition spaces' really function as transitions....See More19.5x12.5 L Kitchen w Island layout critique
Comments (10)mama goose, great ideas. I've planned for ~2" of filler next to the dishwasher. The MW next to fridge is a good idea, but this is where I planned to store dishes/glasses. I'm hearing people are liking storing dishes in drawers nowadays however. So maybe this is an option. As for the window heights off the floor, it's a great idea and extending the cabinets down the wall now would solve a number of problems, but there's a long list of specific reasons to this house & site that I'd like to keep a big window there. The island as pictured was 6'6". I needed 18" for the prep sink, 18" for pullout trash, and ~15" for the end seat. This leaves me with 27" between my drawers and the end-shelf idea of yours which is great, and is now a must-have. I think 21" and 6" for those would be OK, but it'd be a sacrifice to my prep area storage I'm unsure about, and especially so if the island is shortened further. Instead, I ran with an idea I had had before of a longer island / table abutting the island. I'll have to think this over and would love feedback on this. This is really the elephant in the room here I think. I lose up to 3 seats here, but gain a 3' wide footpath to the door, with no odd collisions. Comments (19)I loved our house with 9 ft ceilings; my present house has 8 ft on the ground floor and 9 ft on the second (where we added a full dormer and I insisted they do 9 ft ceilings). Our house in LA had a 12 ft ceiling in the enormous LR - it was 18 x 40. I agree that it's a matter of proportion. While I would prefer 9 ft ceilings on my first floor, the room sizes of all the rooms are good (DR is too small for my very wide table - ceiling height wouldn't make a difference). Due to no "open concept" my well-sized rooms make the house "live well" so that extra foot of ceiling is probably more noticed by me (a designer) than most people. The fad for these very tall ceilings has come from the open concept movement which involves rooms that look big on paper, but are in fact, rather small due to the lack of walls and floating furniture for traffic patterns. So the builders just made the ceilings higher - far less expensive than adding square footage to the house. And everyone thought he was getting something very grand and very special....See More1940's, 10ft ceiling living room - need furniture help!
Comments (17)A couple of things strike me right away that throw the room off. First is the rug: It needs to be much much larger, and it should never be narrower than the couch. Second is to get longer curtains and hang them about a foot higher than they currently are. The art arrangement over the piano doesn't work; we'll remedy that. I like your fireplace and built ins. The shelves just need to be better styled--there are some good articles on Houzz to help with that, but basic rule is 1/3 books. 1/3 objects. 1/3 empty space--and I'd remove everything now over the mantel and use art. I suspect you can buy new furniture for no more than what it would cost to upholster yours, but that's a decision for you to make. I'll return later with a rendering of your room....See Morekaylint
