Question about Trailing Jade....
Comments (18)Is it normal for these plants to periodically drop long tendrils/stems? My trailing jade plant is extremely full and long (about 4 feet) and appears to be very healthy, but it has recently started dropping long stems. I'm wondering if I need to thin out the plant from time to time, or if this is just a normal part of the plant's life cycle. Here's a picture of the plant shortly after I bought it a few months ago. Here's a more recent picture. The plant has not grown much, but has greened up since being hung next to a window with an eastern exposure (lots of light, but not direct). For now, I am replanting the dropped stems, and they seem to be "taking" - there's new growth shooting up through the soil in the second pot I've used for the dropped stems. If anyone has any advice regarding caring for this type of plant, I would really appreciate it. I'm definitely a novice gardener, but would like to learn more! Comments (5)I did some searching online and found one possible cause of these 'freckles' is mold. The solution was to rub the leaves with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol, and I did this last night. Already the spots are beginning to clear on all but a couple of leaves, which will be getting another rubdown shortly. I do have a couple of questions, though, that I had asked on another thread that went unanswered. I currently have the plant beneath a flourescent bulb where I've kept my Christmas cacti, which have done -beautifully-. Will the Jade do well here, or are there other preparations I need to make for it? I know they like lots of light, and so I figured the flourescent bulb would be a good source. Also, would having my Jade outside in the summer be a good idea...? It tends to get quite humid in the summer, though, to the point of making it hard to breathe when combined with the heat(80-100 degrees F). Though, also, in the summer, we have the air conditioner on, and any table with sufficient light is by the air duct, which I know probably wouldn't do the plant any favors to have a constant stream of cold, dry air going across it....See MoreQuick question about jade plant roots
Comments (4)If your soil is as compacted as you think and watering from the top just runs to the sides and straight out of the pot without being absorbed, you may need to repot. The other option would be to get a bowl or other container and soaking the whole plant in water with the level of the water about 2/3 up the side of the pot. I usually let mine soak about 10-15 minutes or so. I have even done some for up to an hour depending on the size of the pot. If your soil is peat based in any way, the soil will be extremely hydrophobic. Watering this way will wick the water into the soil. You will know when it is completely moist because the you will be able to see the soil moist on top, or at least an inch down. If you still think your soil is too compacted then repot. I would not water right after repotting though. I would moisten the soil slightly that you are using for repotting, then transplant. Leave about a 1/3 of the original soil and try not to disturb the roots too much. After you repot, put in shade for about a week, and then start your regular watering and put back in full sun. These are just suggestions I have gotten from others. They seem to work....See MoreQuestions about jade plants:
Comments (6)Hmmmm. I ask because my small-leaf jade has developed to the point where the leaves on the lowest couple inches of the plant are about the size of the leaves on the plants at work. I'd normally assume that they're the same species and the ones at work are building bigger leaves because they get better light, but when I put some cuttings of the small one outside this summer, they kept the same size -- it's only the relatively older plants that have suddenly started enlarging their lower leaves. I'm not worried about it -- big leaves seem like a good sign, if anything -- but since I've never seen this plant do this, I'm just wondering what species I've actually got here. Thanks for the response....See MoreLizardhandz (6a SE MI)
