Don't do it. Not long from now, you will regret sacrificing the quality of your cabinets for a trend that will be "out" just as quickly as it was "in". Bring navy in with accessories, rugs, etc.

Forget HD and Lowes.

What do you think about getting white to match the uppers and then painting/stenciling them yourself after closing (or paying a pro to do it)?

Lowe's or HD is not a good alternative to what you will have. Give up the idea of the navy or pay the extra money. Depending on the number of cabinets, it may cost the same to have them repainted later.

I agree - don't go with a tryndi (sic) color. You'll regret it very shortly. I have always had white kitchens, even through the oak-and-brass craze; the cherry-and-stainless craze; the grey-and-antique bronze craze.

Navy blue has been my favorite color since middle school. If it's your favorite color, I say... do what brings you joy.

Can you help the budget by using ikea cabinet boxes with door and drawer fronts from Scherr's or Semi Handmade? Bonus: you can pick up the cabinet boxes the same day.

What is the actual cabinet budget? 40K? 60K? 15K? Because it probably wasn’t actually realistic from the beginning is the issue. Or the kitchen is twice the size of a 10x12 “average” space.

Navy is readily available in a wide variety of lines. And isn’t that exhorbitant either. The issue isn’t going to be the color. The 20-25% upcharge for any painted color should be exactly the same as if you picked white. If you’re having issues with the budget and painted cabinets, it’s not the color choice. It’s the budget.

Sophie- probably. 25K. The kitchen is roughly 12x20'. This is for all cabinetry, including the bath vanities and laundry room as well.

25K for the kitchen is probably doable for a double sized kitchen if they aren’t stacked to the ceiling with stacked crown, giant island, and all of the other Houzz details. But 25K for a whole house is way low. 25K for the kitchen would be pretty darn low if you have Houzz expectations and want all of those Houzz extras.

Unless you're doing builder grade cabinets or Ikea, I can't see how $25,000 is an appropriate budget for a whole house and it certainly isn't if you are expecting plywood boxes and all drawers, etc.

I think I’d do what benjiisbride suggested. - Ikea boxes with semi custom panels. For what it’s worth, I have ikea in a (nice) rental home and they have held up great. They look the same as when they were installed several years later.

Plenty of independents around. Start local. But even long distance is a possibility if you want unbiased help. The Cook’s Kitchen is a regular poster on the Kitchen Forum and she does remote design. Plus a couple of others.

You’re up against a big lead time to do anything. 8-10 weeks this time of the year is normal. Who on your end is going to actually install? Do they have the actual capabilities? A carpenter ain’t a cabinet installer.

You need to start with some education about cabinets, materials and what constitutes good quality. If you want painted cabinet finishes, MDF is far superior to wood. It doesn't suffer from the expansion and contraction that wood will encounter. This means you won't have those nasty little joint cracks that form as wood dries. If you wanted stained cabinets, you would select a wood species to your taste.

While you are going to get some good information at this board, I suggest you cross post over in the kitchen forum. You will find a lot of expertise on the kitchen board.

Everyone under estimates the cost of cabinetry. Get ready for sticker shock. There is a lot that goes into building a good cabinet. Get ready for a crash course.

On a 4500 square foot custom house, that is way too low a budget for cabinets.

Stacy, If you are near northeast Ohio I will suggest Kraftmaid outlet/warehouse. They have tons of kitchens and cabinets. They also have moulding, trim, spindles, sink bowls, vanities. You never what you are going to find. We were able to do kitchen, mudroom, and 2 bathrooms (2600 sq ft) for around 4K. The only piece I had to buy outright was my double wall oven cabinet. And that cost almost as much as all the wall cabinets. We did a dark gray island and cream wall cabinets. I remember they had a good selection of navy and also a variety of other colors. They have sales every other Saturday and I have met several folks who drive a good distance to shop the bargains.

Given your house size and that you dont want ikea, I think you have to increase your budget. I used custom cabinets which I am so happy with. But there was a long lead time. Can you ask your architect if he knows a cabinet maker? Do a google search also for your area. My cabinet maker doesnt advertise so I learned of him through word of mouth. Also, if you can find an interior designer, they may be able to help. The problem is that you dont have much time and every one is so busy nowadays. You have to attack the problem tomorrow because you dont have any time to lose.

I'm assuming you are doing Shaker style cabinets since you mentioned 5-panel drawers. I did slab drawers for my top, shallow drawers as a 5-piece drawer looks "crowded" - did the 5-piece for the deeper drawers. I have fake panels on two ends, and plain on the other. They were all supposed to be plain, but refrigerator cabinet was incorrectly ordered...twice...and two pieces were used for two ends. I would not have paid a penny extra for paneled ones - these were free due to error. I also have some MDF in my cabinets. This is NOT a problems - they are very sturdy, high quality cabinets.

My cabinets are made by Shiloh. I chose not to spend extra for Blum drawer slides. Shiloh uses a very high quality slide and it saved me several hundred dollars.

My kitchen is 11x15 and is NOT an open kitchen - it's a separate room with 3 door openings and a huge bay window over the sink area. I think my cabinets (just the cabinets) cost about $19,000. This was for painted (stock color) uppers and lowers, full-inset uppers (no up-charge), and European frameless bottoms. That price included the installation of the cabinets, but not the countertops. I don't have an island - islands are very expensive. I don't have room for one, either. So I bought an Ikea island cart that is about 17" x 39" and painted the base (butcher block on top). It's perfect and so useful. It also cost about $100.

I would spend my money on my kitchen cabinets and get what I wanted. A bathroom cabinet isn't as important, and laundry room cabinets can be stock, off-the-shelf from a big box store. No, $25,000 was probably too low a budget. Remember, builders are used to putting in cheap builder-grade garbage so to them, this sounds like a lot!

See if you can find a Shlloh dealer in your location. Explain your budget and color requirements. Ask them where you can save a bit without cutting out the important things such as drawers, drawers, and more drawers! Then come back to us with their bid and ideas and we can tell you if you are forgetting something you will later regret.

I hired a kitchen designer through the Cabinet Joint. My intent after lots of research was to buy RTA cabinets through them. I paid $300 for the designer services. She obviously worked with the Cabinet Joint options and sizes, but they were basically custom as they went in 1/8" sizing increments and they had all the options I needed. She was extremely easy to work with online. After the design was complete, it was priced out with the Cabinet Joint. I thought the price was reasonable, but I I went ahead and sent it to a local cabinet maker for comparison. Turns out the price was the same but the local cabinet maker was already assembled and would include install. So we went with that instead. My local cabinet maker used the kitchen drawings from the designer with no problems. The only change was to the vent hood cover, which he ended up making what I wanted based on an inspiration picture.

I was extremely happy to pay the $300 for the design. It allowed me the freedom to price it out with various companies and I didn't worry about me making a measurement error or figuring out where filler strips were appropriate or not. She knew exactly how to handle every corner, end run, etc.....

If your house is as large as 4500 s.f. all your costs will be proportionate to that size. Not just your cabinetry, but your electrical, flooring, painting, counters, tilework, and everything else. It's what you signed up for when choosing a house that size.

Cabinets.com has a color called Naval. They have a variety of cabinet styles available in that color. https://www.cabinets.com/kitchen-cabinets . I have not purchased these cabinets, but they look good on the website. The are offering 30%off through 3/25 AND they are offering a 30% discount on sink bases.

I realize OP has long moved on...but for others that may benefit: I quite easily and affordably received a custom paint color on my master bath cabinets. My cabinets are Marsh and I am working directly with their team in High Point NC. They have been incredibly detailed, professional and affordable.
