I would like to update the kitchen: paint the cabinets, replace countertops, new appliances. I’m looking for design ideas, maybe changing the layout, color choices.

6 years agoIMO the soffit and downlight situation could benefit from being simplified if you keep this cabinet layout. The island seems a bit small and may it would be better change it to an island table so you could see through the element.

Comments (25)lolauren, excellent questions! I think once I post my pictures it might help everyone get a sense of the space. I've never purchased light fixtures before so I'm having a hard time imagining the scale (I think a mock up might be in order). It's also hard to imagine since we don't have the kitchen table yet, although we have a small one we'll be using temporarily. I'll be putting that in there in the next 2 weeks or so. But using my best guess I'd say we can probably work with anything less then 24" wide and preferably 18" high since we're working on the assumption the bottom of the light will be about 5' off the floor, leaving 18" of cord. I just hope that won't look to weird. The light will be on a dimmer. The cans that are on either side plus in the main kitchen will also be on a dimmer (on their own swtich). The pendant will be on it's own switch, no dimmer. The glare is something I'm having a hard time figuring out and maybe once the space is finished we'll have a better sense of what that effect will be like. I like the idea of a shade on the chandelier, and I'm really loving the ones that lolab posted. I am having a hard time figuring out if I want/need uplights or downlights. I think the shades give me the best of both worlds :) I have seen the chandelier that you've posted and I really do like it. It's a definite contender. Thanks! Thank you michellemarie and jillsee :) Brickton, I don't think I can do a linear pendant since we have the recessed lights on either side and there's not a ton of space between the ceailing fixture box and the edge of the header that separates the eat in kitchen part form the main kitchen. Comments (66)I just got home from being out of town and I've been itching to plug your space in to the Ikea planner. I hope you don't mind me posting this even though it sounds like you've made a decision. I do think a better use of your space is to get the fridge out of the primary work area; you'll gain 30ish inches of valuable counter space in there. If you can change the opening from the living room, I think it'll work. This drawing shows a four foot opening starting five feet from the dining area window wall. I also put a pantry next to the fridge to spare counter space. I had to guess on some dimensions. If you're considering Ikea, this layout with the off-white shaker style Ikea fronts (Grimslov), all drawer base cabinets, 40 inch tall uppers and a 18 inch wide pantry shelf is around $3700....See MoreHelp with tiny kitchen layout puzzle
Comments (75)I'm not a fan of the pass-through plan either. Your space is really challenging! I think the pass-through plan is taking sqft from the dining room (?), but you don't seem to be getting much improvement for the changes. I drew a few ideas trying to avoid structural changes, though you'd have to move plumbing. I used the 8'x8'7" size, which I think is the existing kitchen without moving into the dining room, so you could still do cabinets in the dining room for more storage. I'm not completely sure if these ideas work with the dimensions--can you give the measurements for the right of the window and left of the back door? (see blue and green lines below) Here's a galley kitchen similar to your pass-through plan. I prefer this option since the range isn't so close to the back door and no corner cabs. Re: range next to the wall, I drew it this way to give you more prep space next to the range and more separation from the door. NKBA recommends at least 12", but the induction range I'm planning to buy only requires 1" from the wall. You could definitely move the range farther out of the corner (and would be required to if you're getting a gas range), just I would want it farther from the door than it appears in your latest plan. For the sink wall, I would personally choose a smaller sink and refrigerator to gain more counterspace and storage, but you have room for full-size appliances. I'm assuming you can recess the fridge into the wall. I tried an option for an L with a corner sink. I suspect there isn't enough room for the range here without affecting the window, but wanted to share it in case you're open to a 24" range or moving the window. Comments (15)I downloaded your pic and opened it in Paint (actually that's what I did the first time I helped with a layout--now I just copy the pic/drawing and paste it into a Paint shortcut I keep on my desktop). It's easy to use the 'select' function to capture and move boxes. The boxes I drew are estimated to be the correct size. So, only one DW in the kitchen is good news--I misunderstood your post on the other thread, about adding a second DW to the main kitchen. You can easily put the trash/recycle base to the right of the sink, in the main prep area. Are the trash and recycle bins attached to the doors, to swing out with them? If so, I would retrofit pull-outs, and attach the doors to the slider guides, which would make it much easier to use the pull-out from the sink side. If the main prep space will be on the island, I'd leave the trash there, and put the 47.5" base to the right of the clean-up sink. If you put a 12" cabinet in each corner with 3" filler, you'll have symmetry within .5" on the sink wall. If you use a cabinet with only a full height door (no top drawer), you might be able to omit the filler, and increase the new 12" cabinets to 15". Drawers and/or pull-outs would definitely need filler to open past the hardware or oven door handle on the perpendicular runs. Since your sink base is 45", have you considered the Kohler Stages 45, or a similar sink? At any rate I'd use at least a 33" sink (which I have, and love--it hides lots of dirty dishes). 36" seems to be a popular size, too. I forgot to mention in the previous posts that I made the island less deep, and increased the width of the work aisle. The island is 42" deep, which includes the standard 24" deep bases, cover panel, 16" seating overhang, and front counter overhang.
