How similar is that to floss sticks? I've tried using the floss stick but the floss end up breaking off. I'll have to check that out next time I'm at the store. DD is a good brusher and flosser but I take her in every 3 months for cleanings..she gets build up fast. Now son who probably hasn't seen any floss since his last cleaning always gets rave reviews when he goes in for cleanings. No build up etc etc.

I tried that recently. Worked fine for teeth in the front, but I found it extremely awkward for rear teeth, not to mention the fact that I couldn't floss properly with the "C" motion. Back to my fingers.

Alwaysonestep- I have a child prone to build up as well- he inherited it from his DH- quite a bummer. I do not like it at all. You have my sympathies (though of course it is no big deal in the scheme of things.)

I've had no trouble with the floss end breaking off. I find I use less torque on the implement because it fits more easily in my mouth. Maybe that helps.

Cindymac, the floss is perpendicular to the handle and so it's easy to manipulate and your hands stay outside your mouth. I'm sure there are a few types.

I’m a good flosses, but find it hard to hang on to the floss. Will be sure to give this a try. That bottom pick/flossed I don’t like! See way too many of them littering the ground.

Elmer, I used the Listerine flosser. Just didn't care for it. I still have all my wisdom teeth and most of my teeth are close together which made using even harder. Prefer regular floss.

Unfortunately they don't work with bridgework You still have to thread the floss around it.

I think Target carries the product. The floss part lasts longer than you would think - or maybe longer than you'd want - and they sell packages of just that part as shown separately in the photo above. I use the little things for a week or more (rinsed after each use) and even at that they don't seem to break.

Yes, chessey, I'm sure these aren't for everyone. I've got only my own choppers and so there's no problem. Or, maybe some would find these easy to use for other areas in the mouth, away from bridgework.

I must have missed the original post about this. I need to try it too. Am not a consistent flosser.

I also tried this. It does a good job between the teeth that have a little room between them. Unfortunately, I have several that are too tight and I end up shredding the skinny floss. Thicker Glide floss works better for my teeth. Besides which, Ive always been told to use a length of floss, and after each time you put it between two teeth, you move down a little on the strand so you’re not using the same section of floss over and over and spreading bacteria around. With this doohickey, I felt like I might be spreading bacteria by repeatedly using the same half inch piece of floss, so I wiped the floss after each insertion between my teeth. I’m back to the old fashioned method.

Your mouth and the places in it are full of bacteria before, during and after you floss each tooth. Swish a little saliva around in your mouth and you've spread what's there to every nook and cranny.

I think the object of flossing is like brushing, it's the physical contact that does the job. I once asked my dentist whether it was better to floss after brushing or before, whether it was useful to rinse the mouth out along the way or not. His response was to the effect of "Do it however you prefer, it doesn't really matter. I just want you to floss at least once every day". I'm sure different dentists will have different views but that was what I was told.

Did you see the research announced recently that concluded flossing isn't worth doing? I don't understand that at all, because flossing clearly makes good sense. It "brushes" the tooth parts a brush can't reach.

That is interesting, Alisande. I did not see that, but it seems something that is supposedly beneficial/healthy ends up not being so and it's hard to keep track. What will be next?

I probably floss 3 times a day. Food gets stuck in between certain teeth and it drives me nuts. I like the Glide flossers, they are white and designed similar to the one in the OP, but much shorter. Walmart carries them sometimes, other times I order them on Amazon.

I had seen the media reports about flossing myself. Here is what the American Dental Association says:

In short, they appear to say flossing offers minimal benefits, but that since 50 percent of American suffer from gingivitis/periodontal disease, it's worth achieving the small benefit. Specifically the authors pointed out two difficulties in studying the benefits of flossing: First, people fib and say they floss more than they do, so studying the effects of flossing can be difficult based upon reliance on self reporting. Second, there are people who floss well and people who do not floss well- most do not. So even when people are telling the truth about their flossing habits, they may be very poor flossers, hence harming the studying of flossing.

As a lifetime non-flosser, this article, which I read a while ago, did not convince me that my non-flossing ways were acceptable. It seems obvious to me that if I have nasty stuff caught in between my teeth that cannot be doing any good for my teeth and gums, or my overall health in general.

Does everyone also 'sieve and rinse'? Really force water through your teeth and spit? I am always amazed to see what was left behind!

Is there some 'new, improved' value in mouthwashes over water? Their claims to 'remove 99% of bacteria' are pretty silly. As Elmer just stated, your mouth will 're-grow' all of that in an instant.
