.... so how DO you put a wardrobe together??
Comments (48)Ms-thrifty Good insight on the special event clothing. I read this in a recent better homes and garden issue, and applied it. I have started to consciously tried to steer into special clothes that can transition down to dressy casual. And then add accessories that can work with other outfits to bring UP casual to be dressy casual. Example is my niece is getting married tonight. I bought a solid color sheath dress that goes to the knee, and a chunky colored crystal necklace. I can wear them together tonight with heels for the evening wedding. To bring the dress down to dressy casual: I can wear the dress with silver jewelry and sandles. I can add a denim jacket and flats for fall. I can wear the dress with black tights, boots, and a cardigan for a winter. I can wear the crystal necklace with a white T shirt and dark rinse jeans for dressy casual. I can do the same with a turtleneck and boots for fall/winter. So I think what I figured out with this is you need to be selective in choosing the dress so it can work up or down. And be willing to also buy that accessory to bring it up to the full dressiness of the more formal occasion....See MorePlease help me pull this bath redo together? (Lots of pics)
Comments (23)Lyfia, I thought about your great idea and stood there and sized up the situation. I think that is beyond my meager capabilities and the chair rail would come right in the middle of it. I wish I'd thought of it before I put up the wainscoting, and maybe then I'd have had a fighting chance at it, but not now. Lukkirish, I will, thanks. Here is what keeps haunting me about this job. I have a leftover (from previous home) partial roll of wallpaper here that I adore, that looks fab with the Mucha. It's an arts and crafts pattern. I just keep coming back to wanting to use this paper. [](http://tinypic.com?ref=2woja78) The problem is, I don't have enough of it for the job, even with not going over the bathtub area. I have looked and looked and can't find anything out there like it. So the question is, could I put up narrow margin molding frames on the upper walls and put this paper inside them, then paint the paper's background color on the rest of the wall? Or the lighter beige\-peach featured in the first picture here? Or with the wainscoting would that look too choppy? Here is an example of a framed wallpaper panel: [](http://tinypic.com?ref=vkxae) What if I did it ONLY behind the Mucha and nowhere else in the room? What do you think?...See MoreOkay, WHY do you hate/love a trend?
Comments (107)Didn't someone (Pal?) have a post a few years back about why we hated some trends, and that one reason revolved around what we grew up with? Because I honestly don't care for MCM - at least the stuff that I grew up with -- the starburst wood clock, formica countertops, the hanging chained light fixtures, the gold carpeting, specific colors such as harvest gold, avocado green, some tones of rust/orange, etc. Meanwhile, a friend of mine who is 12 years younger loves MCM. And, it's that I don't want to live with those things (and they don't fit into the style of my house) but I don't mind seeing them in other people's houses as long as those things "fit" the style and are well-done. Then, I can appreciate the style... but I still don't want to "live" in the house with the style. Also, now that I'm older and have traveled, I don't like things that just purchased to "pull the design together" - like when stagers are trying to neutralize a room with objects that pull the colors together but don't have any real "worth." Stuff that doesn't really have any meaning or purpose. I like to decorate with things that remind me of places that I've been or that are made by artists/craftsmen (doesn't have to be expensive) rather than mass-produced. When I was just out of college, I had more of those decorating pieces from Target, etc. because I hadn't traveled and lived enough (plus, no money) to have accumulated many items that had personal meaning, yet....See MoreOkay, need some help with color
Comments (37)AKT, I love that greyish green color! I could definitely live with that. Tempted to try making the railing another color-my husband used to be so good at doing stuff around the house, especially finish work. Now, I am not sure he would be as much a perfectionist. Hmmm, something to consider. I was thinking having the house wall all white might be a bit much. DH likes the idea of a taupe, but I think he would love the green/grey. I will take this to our local store and ask a designer there to help! Funny Mtn. I adore your dining room there in CT. Did you tell the designer that you thought it was a soft green? Girlnamedgale, I wondered about black. I think I would find it a bit dark, but stain might work....See MorePeggy (Saskatchewan, Canada zone 3b)
