Timing spring bloom...in New England, which daffs bloom w phlox?
Comments (7)vetivert, I have stayed away from forget me nots because of the traveling they do. [g] I will check the minis and the species daffs, thanks. Pitimpinai, my phlox just started blooming 2 days ago. Looks like our timing is pretty close to each other. That is so funny that you mention 'Curlew'. I forgot I had it...lol. It has been blooming since April 12th and still looks good in part shade. My phlox is in full sun so the timing might be a little off. I could pick up a few bulbs in the fall and try it. I think you are right, you just can't figure out bloom time any more. I guess we will just have to keep experimenting. Maybe if we purchase the latest bloomers we will find one that works with phlox? So disappointing when you are waiting to see your plan work out and it doesn't. This has been the strangest spring. Great yes, but I can hardly believe it is almost May 1st. It feels like it should be almost the end of May. [g] I wonder what we'll be like in 5 years?...See MoreBloomin' Gardens Game

Comments (9)Something else to consider about 'Cramoisi Superieur' is the case of the climbing form, which was long considered to be a sport but which was actually found to (most likely) be a self-seedling. I posted a link to a genetics paper which investigated many Chinas as a reference on HelpMeFind, which can be seen among the others for 'Cramoisi Superieur, Climbing'. Here is the relevant part from that paper: "The dendogram based on the SSR data also helps show the realtionship of another group of red China Roses. Though both accessions C4 and C3 [both ex Antique Rose Emporium] are triploid and rarely set hips, the double flowered rose 'Climbing Cramoisi Superieur', is said to be a seedling of 'Cramoisi Superieur' (Dickerson, 1992). The similarity of 0.87 found in this study does indeed support seedling status or other close inbred relationship, rather than the more common situation where a climbing variety named for another cultivar is the vegetative sport of that cultivar." Vintage Gardens listed their 'Cramoisi Superieur' as being a non-climbing sport they propagated from their climbing plant -- which means it's not the same non-climbing 'Cramoisi Superieur' that other nurseries have (unless they obtained it from Vintage Gardens). They also mentioned in their description of the non-climbing form that theirs grows somewhat larger than others they have seen. If you're interested in reading the whole paper, you can see it in the link below: http://repository.tamu.edu/bitstream/handle/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-2009-12-7450/SOULES-THESIS.pdf?sequence=2 :-) ~Christopher...See Morejerijen
