Skylight over a shower. Yay! or NAY!
Comments (12)Thanks flyleft. Speaking of dope, the reason I'm getting this installed at just the cost of the skylight itself is because my dope GC installed the skylight we had on the plans (that is over the vanity) as a fixed skylight even though we talked about the fact that operable is the only way to go in a bathroom. Anyway, the compromise was that he'd put in a SECOND skylight and put it over the shower, moving some plumbing and stuff to make it happen, and I'd pay for the skylight. If I went with an electrically operable one I'd have to pay to add the wiring and I just wasn't willing to go that far, we're so broke as it is. I agree though, those are the best which is why we've done one of those over the stairway. LIke you said, it's cool because when it rains it will shut automatically. I'm figuring the one in the shower will never be more than a few inches open, and if it rains, well, it's going into the shower! Thanks again....See MoreHanging a wood framed mirror over a wall to wall bathroom mirror
Comments (33)ThatÂs what I was afraid of. I didnÂt want to put ideas in peopleÂs headsÂbut that is the reservation I have. I think having to use it on one side of the wall, asymmetrically, doesnÂt work. I was SO sure it would look great, and be really like the finishing touch in this room. Darn! The thickness, bulkiness, of it bothers me too, in that place. Too much mass. I thought, before I tried it, that it would balance the weight of the solid looking vanity. Instead it just makes it look like too much weight on the left side of the room and nothing on the right. Having to one side bothers me with the light fixture too, and I love that light. It doesnÂt show well in the photos, but is a stained glass repro I ordered from a craftsman lighting company, in a custom size. The mirror is discontinued, so I canÂt get another to balance it better. It doesnÂt look right centered on the big mirror either. Too odd when you are standing in front of the vanity. Sigh. I love this mirror. Buying this one when it went on clearance was what made me decide to have a craftsman bathroom in the first place! (Well, that and it opens off a craftsman family room.) I have one open wall on that room, where I used to have a framed picture. IÂll try propping it up there. The craftsman family room already has a mirror....See MoreBathroom mirror size over double vanity - single or double?
Comments (10)I prefer two mirrors as well because I think it gives a more balanced look and it provides defined spaces, his and hers in our case. Your statement about wanting to make it so that 3 people can use it is what has me curious though, is this a what if type scenario or is a 3rd person actually going to be in there all the time? The reason I ask is because DH and I used to make choices based on the what if's a lot. We'd spend the money or compromise on what we really wanted only to never have those "what if's" materialize. We bought a crew cab truck so if we needed to we could tote people but never once did anyone sit back there. We turned a room (that could have been my craft room) in to a guest room and in 10 years it's only been used a handful of times and an air mattress would have worked just as well. So if you want the big mirror because it will actually be used in the context you're planning for, great...then there's a need and that would be the more functional choice for your situation, but if you're just thinking well maybe 3 people might need it, then don't focus on that and do what is more practical for your every day living. Comments (46)JK, do you have a vaulted ceiling in this bathroom, so that your ceiling is right near the roof, like in Beth's photo? (Beth, I love your plant wall!) Or is yours more an 8 or 9 ft ceiling , with the roof several feet higher? If it is, there will be a well - a walled tunnel like in Jolene's comment from June 24 - and you won't be seeing much out of the skylight anyway. We added a skylight to our dark kitchen when we had it remodeled in 2010, and it was the best choice we made in the whole remodel. The well was made very big at the bottom so that the light spreads out into the room. I would guess that the skylight is 3 to 4 feet higher than the ceiling, in my case. In no way have I ever looked up at the sky to see the weather or for any other reason. There really is nothing you can see through the skylight....See Morecaligirl5
