Comments (18)Good point, mommie rose. Curiously, I'm propagating some mint now to put it into the ground for that very reason... I need something to blanket over a portion of my backyard it would be very happy in. I want the mint to compete with the weeds that like it there now, but you reminded me I should put a barrier underneath the soil to contain the mint to that area. Secretly, though, I'd like it to take over the grass :) Janelle, the papayas are super easy to grow here. I'm not familiar with Hialeah, but they're all over Kendall hammocks... they love it. There is debate whether or not they are native or naturalized, although I think it's safer to say they are naturalized. The only problem you might have are those papaya wasps, really. Growing up, I remember them spoiling a lot of papayas, but I haven't seen a single wasp-spoiled papaya here in years... don't know what changed, but I wish you the same luck I've been having! Rosemary, you'd be surprised to see what that area looks like now! So much development. It's crazy, and quite sad. But there are plans now to reverse a lot of the drainage, and bring back natural water flow through the historical Everglades... I'm quite happy about it. Of course, I'm on the rock ledge and won't have to deal with any flooding :) Uggh, I remember the canker epidemic. I had a tangerine tree, the best lemons on the planet, key limes, and a grapefruit. They all eventually caught canker and had to be cut down. They didn't lift the citrus ban until this past year, and I need me some Florida lemons. I don't like the ones from California, unless it's for candy, and have to go out of my way to find lemons that are acceptable for lemonade or sauces. I've found some obviously illegaly grown ones being sold at roadside and bought them, even. I miss them so! But what really pissed me was how the "canker officials" would regularly make their way to each house, each yard, and each tree to check for canker. Infected trees would be cut down, or trees close enough to orchards were automatically cut down, and a replacement tree was usually given. But when it comes to the invasive exotics that are destroying the environment there isn't any money to go door to door. Comments (15)The scallions from store bought are not suitable for replanting. I have grown scallions and they usually do well if they ae grown from thin starts. I also grow a walking onion with a stronger onion flavor greens. Not sure, but you may have the signs of damping off, which can easily kill plants if they been grown for consumpton as opposed to seed/set planting. Some seeds are treated with Captan which reduces damping off issues, as well as other fungal issues. Not sure what plating zone your in, but if its 7-4 the garlic should be hard neck types. These have that stiff stalk in the middle when you seperate the cloves. Soft neck is suitable only for the zones 7 and above. I havenever had any luck growing soft neck garlic, so I like to grow the hard neck Music type, which has huge cloves and only one layer of them. Garlic needs a fall planting, and doesn't do as well if planted now. The hard neck sends up a stiff stalk (scapes) that should be cut off before it opens. Allowing them to remain will take energy away from the cloves. I pickle the scapes in dill and vinegar. Great in salads....See MoreHelp, my herb garden seems to be having issues!
Comments (5)Looks like wilt due to thirst to me. But I have questions: What kind of soil you used ? What kinds of herbs (by name) you have in that container? The things is that not all "HERBS" have the same needs(Water, fertilizer, soil drainage, pH...) For example , cilantro and basils like more water and fertilizer than thyme and sage. Actually they need no fertilizer and very little water. So then you cannot just pack anything and everything that I called HERB into one container and treat them the same way. About the water running out fast: Some medium(like most garden soils) when they dry up in a container, would not get soaked right away. In such cases you have to take time and pour the water a little bit at a time and wait till it starts to penetrate, .. the a little more, a little more. Comments (16)I have started canning because much like Dowlinggram, we have a young family. I became a stay at home mom who has gardened as a hobby for the past 7 years. So I just "upped my game" a little. I am finally putting up some good numbers although much healthier for my family (and way tastier) hubby and I joke we are still no where near in the money saving range yet. Between fencing, tiller, more fencing (stupid deer), humane traps for the groundhogs (over a dozen in our yard this year had to be relocated or we were going to have even more serious issues next year), and all the jars I have bought this year - maybe next year we will see the economic savings. I do have to say though, it has still all come out of my normal grocery budget and the food is not only much better, but it is all an investment. And to be honest, the stay at home mom thing was a bit of a shock to my system (don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade it for the world) so no matter what it gives me the feeling even if it is not "financial sound" yet that I am productive and doing something healthy and good for my family. I do have to say though, my husband and I took care of his parents for the last few years before they passed away. His father need to go on an extreme low salt diet. I did a lot of label reading and it is amazing how much salt they hide in everything. I really wished I was canning at that time. Low sodium was not NO sodium.
