I had tile laid 3rd party through a flooring company. Big mistake. the contractor hired inexperienced workers who goofed up about 9 tiles (uneven/not adhering well and they have loosened) The contractor came back twice to fix it (complaining the second time) It's still not fixed...so I'm going to do it myself...I'm very handy and recently retired so i can take my time to fix them RIGHT. In the past 3 years EVERY installation job we hired out on our home has been screwed up. That's why i am going to do almost everything myself now. I have replaced a garage wall, repainted the outside of the house with replacing several pieces of wood siding, put in 2 windows (in dormers), refinished wood floors in 3 rooms, etc. I am currently repainting most of the inside of the house and refinishing a gorgeous oak staircase that was covered by carpeting. I only hired out for the tile flooring because i didn't have time then (working full time) and had never put in tile before.

By the way, you should have the rest of his work inspected, where anything hazardous could be involved like electricity, plumbing, structural work. If he's done any other tile work, like a shower area, beware of potential water damage. Whatever work he was overseeing as GC I would be very concerned about. He doesn't appear to even have any building experience, or common sense, having done something so foolish as that. Know that even though something might appear to be alright on the surface, that may not be the case. Good luck.

Lets say it is out of spec/standards Do you have a Permit a real contractor and A Contract? what do you hope to gain by posting this on multiple forums? If you have done all the proper paperwork and have documentation you even then may not have a case. Most everywhere in residential Namerica tile projects are not inspected (other than a shower base or pan & drain ) nor have any local standards to follow. This is why homeowners like you need to document things, get a contract that spells out tile standards that are non existant at the local level. If you have none of that you left yourself unprotected and are learning a hard lesson.

The fix is to remove it and source better tile. The installer should have put the breaks on and refused this tile order when he went to the vendor to pic it up and pay the balance. Since the tile installer bought the tile approved the tile and installed the tile id say he or she is responsible. Wait, You didnt source and buy the tile yourself did you? I just dont know any professional tile installers that would go ahead and install this material, usually its A novice or handyman that havent been down this road yet, begs the questions who did you hire and what installation standards are referenced in your agreement? who bought the tile? Someone else had posted earlier and had misquoted the TCNA standards I thought id clear that up for anyone serious about the tile trades and standards and is getting misinformed on houzz(surely well intended).. Understanding the TCNA and how ANSI is implemented is indeed a little tricky if you not in the tile trades but to clarify . It is ANSI A137.1 that sets the spec for Allowable warpage in tile as being acceptable from MFG. While they may make recommendations on how to minimize lippage, its the tile mfg themselves that shall spec their products stagger. In many cases the tile gets sold and its already not in ANSI tolerances from the get go. One more reason I as the end installer must control the tile purchase and selction or pass on the job.
