Need advice--recovering patio chair
Comments (16)Lucy, thanks for writing me off-group and giving me the heads up! (hope my reply was helpful) goodness, all these replies. Don't know why I wasn't getting them in my inbox. hm. Maybe my email program sees it as spam or something.... *off to check the manual* Thanks all for the kind words! I've had to stop awhile cuz the cord wore the skin off the *back* of my fingers. OWWWW! And bandaids seem to get stuck, so I'm just going to wait a week, then finish the next chair. My fingertips are just fine though (probably because I check my blood sugar about 10 times a day--super-thick calluses). Good thing I was using smooth nylon cord instead of that prickly hemp. shudder So I've decided to make cushions for the seat part too (as I get older, my butt gets sore faster! :-D). Out of the denim I'd tried using originally. Already has ties on it. Just needs backing and stuffing. I've been hanging out at the nearest Goodwill to get pillows I can use as stuffing. And Rhonda, yes, free is GREAT!!! penny saved and all that......See MoreRecovering chairs seats -- need staple gun advice
Comments (19)kitch4me - You are right...a compressor & air gun would be optimal. The cost would have been a little more, but likely worth it. We have very limited storage space at our home, so didn't want to store a compressor. I am getting by pretty well with just this electric gun. After my projects are complete (and if I decide to continue upholstery for a long term hobby), I may decide to go with a compressor & air gun. loves2read makes a helpful suggestion about the size (not thickness) of your foam. I just looked at my upholstery book and it shows a picture of the layers. The top layer shows the wooden seat, then the foam below the seat (sticking out maybe 1 or 1-1/2"?), then below the foam is a layer of batting (sticking out about 2-1/2" beyond the wood), last layer is the fabric (sticking out about 3-1/2 - 4" beyond the wood). So, as loves2read recommends...the foam is going to be smaller than the fabric. You don't have to staple through the foam. P.S. Can anyone tell me how to resize my photos in Photobucket? I would like them to be about half as big (as what I posted above). I used to be able to do this, but Photobucket has made some changes....See MoreNeed direction on how to recover these dining room chairs
Comments (7)Webbing over the opening, woven with about 1" between the weave, horizontally and vertically, covered with upholstery foam cut to fit, then wrapped with batting and then fabric. Leaving the seating base open, supported by woven webbing, precludes the potential 'whoopee cushion' effect when guests sit (or so my upholstery instructor stated 30 years ago.) It's pretty easy to do with a staple gun - did 10 of them in a day a couple of months ago. Just staple one side of the webbing, then pull down tight against the opposite side of the seat and staple the opposing side of the webbing and then cut to size - no special tools required for slip seat dining chairs other than a staple gun and pair of scissors, they're the easiest upholstered piece to reupholster. Go for it - you'll love the results!...See MoreOttoman Recovering Advice
Comments (3)Your inspiration piece is upholstered in leather with lots of tufting. Unless you are very experienced in upholstery I would not attempt it. You could consider painting your current ottoman black (google painting upholstered furniture) and adding nailhead trim (you can purchase it by the yard). Acrylic furniture legs are available on-line, here are some from Ebay: Acrylic legs. The inspiration ottoman is about 18" high, so I think you would need at least 8" legs. It will probably cost you at least $100 to try to replicate the black leather ottoman, and you might not be completely satisfied with the outcome. I've seen ottomans similar to your inspiration for about $275, perhaps you could consider selling the one you have and buying the one you want?...See MoreUser
