A Little Trick To Salvage Your Milkweed Seeds
Comments (18)Tony, sorry to hear about your calotropis seeds. There are lots of calotropis plants where my daughter lives, I've thought about having her send me some seed. If I can give her directions to the really nice purple shrub growing in the neighborhood across the street from their area, maybe she'd find a seedpod that I could share. I grew a lot one year, and the caterpillars loved the leaves. I 'll put in a request for a seedpod. . . or two. Lila, will you stay in Texas? Hope your gopher spurge works, I may try to find some of that. Will you get more land? Do you already have a place picked out to move? Yes, lots of questions! If you get to your new place in time, I'll send some more Aristolochia clematitis roots to see if you can get it started. It has taken over the garden. I ordered 3 Asclepias lanceolata plants from a NC nursery, so will be trying these. The flowers are a beautiful deep orangey red color. They arrived dormant, but the crowns look healthy. This is the way Seneca Hills used to send her plants. Sure do miss her! I'll try the physocarpus again. Hopefully, I'll have a greenhouse by next winter. It's on my want list, now that I have a place for one. We got lots of good moisture this past week, so should see some sprouting taking place in a couple of weeks. I do not have any luck with milkweed seeds ordered from Georgiavines. Anyone else have this problem? I much prefer Prairie Moon or Butterfly Encounters. So, I just need to quit ordering seed for GV, as it's not going to get any better. I also ordered Purple MW seeds from Everwilde, and only got 7 seeds in one packet. It seems they used to give you more. I did, however, get a bunch of A syriaca seeds from them. Purpurascens seeds seem scarce this year. Hope I get some seed pods this summer. Even though the gophers love this plant, they don't seem to get all the roots, and new plants pop up in different places. Sandy...See MoreSilly Little Question - S&P
Comments (18)Even though marked ones have more holes for salt, my parents always put pepper in the one with more holes because the bigger grains of pepper come out slower per hole than the salt. On the other hand, we have one set where one shaker has two holes and the other has three, but the two hole one has bigger holes than the 3 hole. If I used that pair I would definitely put the pepper in the one with the bigger holes even if it has fewer holes. We use grinders for the pepper and our salt shakers came from pepper grinder salt shaker pairs but the grinders died....See MoreTricks for working with HSTs
Comments (11)The very first thing I do is check to see how much the fabric will stretch on the bias (all do, some more than others) by gently pulling the catty-corners of a small square. Then I cut fabric strips the desired width; then I use fusible interfacing, either sheer or featherweight. If the fabric is *very* stretchy, I fuse the entire strip. For those fabrics that are just a bit stretchy, I cut into squares and then use either 3/4" or 5/8" strips of the fusible, pressing it from corner to diagonal corner. Like BG, I prefer to sew HSTs by squares - to me, it's faster. I've been playing with paper piecing, and that also seems effective in preventing stretch, but I'm not at all sure there is any time-saving benefit. OTOH, if one is combining HST with squares, it does make for perfect points with no stress :) I almost forgot to say: I always prewash the fabric to preshrink and to check for color run, then press and starch it on the backside. Spray-starching on the face sometimes makes the fabric slightly slippery, increasing the difficulty of maintaining even seams. Pellon's fusible sticks with no problems on the starched material....See MoreSilly little tree frog
Comments (18)I would capture all that I could find and take them to a shelter or forest and wildlife authorities to take care of them. Leaving them be may seem like the easy thing to do, but it's not the right thing to do. Unless you want to bring them in and give them appropriate care as pet frogs. Which, if you did that, there's lots of care information on the Internet for them. They make okay captives. Pretty neat. Just gotta dechlorinate the water....See Morelinnea56 (zone 5b Chicago)
