Just in time for Halloween ...

Too late for Valentine's Day, but just in time for Halloween, a couple of amorous spiders hung out together for a week on a large web that was strung between the house and the patio roof ...

The smaller male patted and danced around his potential mate for hours. Every morning the web would be gone, but reappeared every night and they were at it again ...

Then nothing for a week. No web. No spiders. What happened?

Then tonight I see she is back, alone, spinning her web by the light of the moon ...

Was she away laying her eggs? And daddy spider, where is he? Was he sacrificed for the nourishment of the mother?

The web Ms. Spider is busy spinning can be seen with the flash on ...

This isn't our usual 'black and yellow garden spider' Argiope aurantia but is probably this one:

Neoscona crucifera
(Spotted Orbweaver)

Summary

"This species is relatively variable in color and sometimes pattern,
but is most commonly seen sporting a rusty-red or golden orange color.
The orb-shaped web is very large and is often constructed on buildings
and other man-made structures, especially near outdoor lights. This
species is most conspicuous in late summer and early fall."

Happy Halloween! Bob is ready with several sacks of candy. He absolutely loves passing it out and exclaiming over the costumed kids, some so young they have no idea what's going on, but hey -- there's candy.

Are you ready for the "trick or treaters"?
