How would you decorate this great room wall?

We are in the midst of finishing our great room. The walls are painted with Benjamin Moore Willow Creek. As you can see from the picture (sorry if it is not extremely clear), there is a large chocolate brown sectional and the corner wall with the fireplace has been refinished with RealStone Arctic White stone. I like the pops of red color with this. I am also planning to replace the rug in front of the couch.

I need to do something with the wall over the couch. A large picture just looks too flat and blah. I am thinking about getting some staggered lengths of chocolate brown floating wall shelves to put above the couch. Suggestions? I am not great at picking out the pieces to put on the shelves, but my gut tells me that I need some depth on that long blank wall.

This second picture is the type of staggered look I am considering.

It appears the sectional is backed up to the wall. Is there room to pull the sectional forward away from the wall and out of the corner? If so, a sofa table or console behind it with art above and a lamp, greenery, framed photos or mementos. Maybe a floor lamp on the closed corner as well.

The current rug under the sectional is too small, you mentioned replacing.

The sectional cannot be pulled out from the wall as it would block the path of the rest of the room.

Thank you, CB! I'm still sold on a floral arrangement next to the TV, and maybe a solid color table runner. Roobear, thanks for the help but with the tv above the big fireplace, it looks like two black holes! lol. Also, having such a high technological piece above an 18th century FP defeats the purpose. No offense to anyone, but I don't like TV's above the FP. IMO, a FP should stand alone, except for regular decorating on top of it. No large clocks. They're too trendy. I also have a nice grandmother clock on the mantel which has beautiful westminster chimes. Hockeymom, I agree. The good thing is the room is sooo big the tv isn't even a focal point. It comes across as one in pictures, but it's not IRL. Maybe in a few years when the newness wears off of the stand, I'll get a nice piece of furniture for the TV..which is what I wanted in the first place..but oh well, dh was so proud of his purchase, I didn't have the heart to tell him it wasn't my cup of tea, but I've learned to live with it so it doesn't bother me anymore. I also remember he drove all over the city in his suit on a very hot summer afternoon shopping for TV's and stands. Men and their toys. :) When we're finished using the FP, I'll piddle around with the bucket and wood stand. Now dh has his chess board sitting behind the bucket! It's nice, but I may move it some & see if he notices. ;)

Call your cable company and ask if they have a smaller more attractive box if you have had it for more than a year. Can you post a picture of what you see looking from the sofa directly forward? Could you just put the TV right there in that area, it looks wide and then put a screen behind it. I have added a link. You could put pictures across the top row and maybe just solid color paper or something in the others. Good luck and please post when you decide what functions for you. Another vote to use the green Roarah showed. Green, along with the other colors in your pillow remind me of the children's book, "The Secret Garden." Plus the colors would be cohesive with the rest of your house, icluding the blues you are using for accessories. Blue is a "cool" color while green is "warm." Maybe it's the blue walls that are throwing you off? With winter coming I'd add a throw quilt or two for the back of the sofa. I'm lousy at describing decor styles, but your's comes off as more minimalist.

What is across from the sectional? And while nice....the chair facing the fireplace...it looks odd with the sectional....could we see more pictures of your room? I like the plan you have for the shelves....just be sure they are not too big so that someone hits their head on them sitting down on the sectional.

Having floating shelves on the same wall as your mantle may get tricky.

Is there anyway you can place the sectional so it faces the fireplace?

Your wall color and fireplace are lovely. It seems like the furniture is too large for this room and the arrangement is making it difficult to embrace. I like the staggered wall look you are going for, but the sectional would definitely need to be pulled out from the wall to be able to pull that off safely. Can the chaise be removed from it?

Are you open to rearranging the room? I agree that you should try to move the chair and ottoman and float the sectional facing toward the fireplace. If you float it, you should have some room for a walkway behind it. Right now the room is heavily balanced towards the sectional corner and adding more things is just going to exaggerate the issue.

What do you think of these shallow bowls? They have some texture and depth but you won't have to worry about people hitting their heads. These are from West Elm and they are sold out but other places carry them.

Can that corner piece of sectional be switched with the other end piece, or removed, the corner makes it seem as it it's back is to everything, sectionals always look great at the store, but are so hard to work with in a home.

I know that the sectional looks huge..and it is, but it really looks worse in the picture. I cannot rearrange the sectional, but I am going to replace that chair in front of the couch. I want something comfy to snuggle into in front of the fire on cold,days, but something with less of a footprint.

I would buy the largest rug possible for the area with the sectional which will help to "pull out" the sofa from that corner. Something with a bit of color to liven up the monochromatic look of the wall and sectional would really help. Instead of red I would consider yellow or lime green pillows, and also pillows with more colors and patterns. I don't see any lighting in that corner which gives it a rather "dead" look. A tall lamp to the left of the sectional would add height to that area in addition to light. Since the mantel already has a shelf-like look, I'm not sure whether shelves are the best idea. They should at least look very different in design and I would paint them the color of the wall. That will make whatever you put on them really stand out. It's a very nice room otherwise. If you like art, a beautiful picture over the mantel would make that area more of a focal point.

This seems like a complicated room. Is it possible for you to add more photos? Maybe we can help with a better layout. It seems like this sectional is backed into a corner and that the other piece is really the only one that gets to enjoy the beautiful fireplace. Below is one of our designs and how we are picturing your sectional facing the fireplace, but at an angle. It would be lovely to see this happen as it seems that the fireplace would be a nice center piece.

Have I mentioned that all of you are ROCKSTARS!?! Thanks so much for all of the feedback. I am posting pictures of the layout of the room. This is a small townhouse with an open floor plan, so unfortunately, I am not able to move the sectional and still be able see the TV ( and this is the only place for a TV on this level of the house.

You could also try an art ledge for over the couch. Or two large vertical complementary art pieces. I think the chair needs to face the rest of the room at an angle next to the fireplace. It would open up the space more.

I think I love you. These are great ideas and having the pictures helps so much. I do plan on replacing the chair also. It is very comfy, but just too huge. Thank you!
