What is the best way to lay hardwood in manufactured home?

I have a manufactured home and want to lay some engineered hardwood. Which way should the planks be laid out? Across the house or the long way. I'm thinking the long way down the hallway might make the hallway appear longer. Please help me with this?

I'm trying to figure out which way to lay the boards in a mobile home. Horizontal or vertical. If I lay them vertical would it make the narrow hallway look even more narrow? thx

It helps to take a small piece of wood ( an old shingle or piece of a 2 x 4) and put it under whatever you are using to pry up the strip. I used one of DH's expensive wood chisels to pry up the tack strip. It worked really well, but probably wasn't very good for the chisel.

Always perpendicular to the floor joists if nailing with cleats, or staples, or when gluing. This is not negotiable; the joist in a sub floor expand and contract seasonally, as will your wood, and you don't want those forces working against you. Having said that, when i am going over concrete with glue, or floating a floor i usually look at the house and determine where the floor joicts would be if it had them, and install perpendiculer to that. The only exception to that would be floating ferry large melamine floors, ie, more than 1400 ft. In such cases i will usually install so that the length of the board points toward the longest part of the floor. Blessings...

You need to run the floors opposite the direction of the joists. If you are on a concrete slab and using engineered wood then you can go either direction and posting photos of the plan will get your question answered.

Flooring in a mobile home can be problematic. The main frame(metal) supports are placed across the width. The problems start with the subfloor material. The quality and type of subfloor material depends on the year, brand, and model of the mobile home.

Very often the subfloor is a form of chipboard(lighter in weight) with no finish. That means water causes swells and glues do not adhere well. That also means the subfloor material will dip between the frame supports and does not support flooring laid in parallel(across the width) with the frame supports.

Clearance for extra height flooring can be a problem. Open the entry door 90° to the wall and measure the space between the door and the floor. The total height of the new floor must be less than that distance.

Most mobile home doors are a set, door and storm manufactured as a complete unit and made of metal with a lip on the inside of the solid door. Often, the bottom of the doors are so close to the finished floor, there is little or no room to install luaun or other subloor prep materials.

The best practice for using plank type flooring is to install underlayment and seam filler(if recommended/required), then the plank flooring parallel to the length of the frame(90° to the width).

Put in a wood look vinyl instead of rebuilding half the home and wasting money on wood.
