Help! two story family room needs painting
Comments (7)Hope my response is not too late to be useful. Before I begin though, a few questions. Are you painting the ceiling too? How high - 17' for more? Flat or cathedral? Graywings' has provided a very helpful list. To it, I suggest a few additional items: A wide blade knive to scrape all the "pimples" from the existing surface. This will minimize the potential for runs in the new paint. A 5 in 1 painters tool to remove the compound from nail pops. Also a screwdriver and/or punch and hammer to tighten the screws or reset any nails. A small container of compound to refill the nail pops. Some drywall tape should it be necessary to replace any that has "popped". Sandpaper to feather any fill areas into the wall surface. A quality sponge to wipe all surfaces dust-free before painting. Possibly caulk and a caulking gun. Use paintable caulk! Visit your local rental agent for tools to assist. They have a variety of items for DIY'ers. Personally I don't like resting an extension ladder against my walls so a Little Giant type ladder (basically an adjustable 2-sided step ladder) will enable you to reach high and adjust to work on stairs too. Or, rent scaffolding - especially useful for cutting-in at the ceiling. Be Safe! TIME! It took me a week to redecorate our entry. The final look will only be as good as the preparation beneath. My painting sequence (following preparation) is ceiling, then trim, then walls. After painting the trim and allowing a day or more for curing, I apply the delicate blue tape to create the clean edge for the wall color on the top edge of baseboard and against the door/window trim. Use an almost dry brush and paint against the tape for the first coat to dry and seal the tape edge and prevent bleeding underneath. Hope this helps. Good luck....See MoreTwo Story Foyer Lighting Question
Comments (22)In a foyer space like yours the chandelier should end 9 1/2' from the floor. Our recommendation will be pendant lighting. Comments (26)The demilune table you have is very nice for the spot. Don't make the mistake of thinking you need to fill the whole wall just because it's tall. Try to keep things in proportion and remember to "decorate where you live". That means hanging artwork, mirrors, etc. as if your ceilings were 8 or 9 feet tall. Whatever you hang over your entry table should be about 2/3 to 3/4 the width of the table and no taller than the height of your door frames. I know it seems like there's going to be a lot of empty space, but that's okay. I moved from a 1949 cape with 7 1/2 foot ceilings to a house with 11' vaulted ceilings and had to learn that things really do look better hung at normal height. The current chandelier seems to be well proportioned for the space and hung at the right height. When you replace it, try to stay to something in that same size range. Congratulations on your new home!...See Moreneed help with two story living room
Comments (23)In order to ground your furniture and make this high room look cozy and inviting, look for a large area rug that should fill most of the floor space with about 1 to 1 1/2 feet of wood showing at the perimeters. Make it something lively and colorful, in tones of terracotta, green, blue, beige. An Oriental rug would look great and will warm up this room and reduce the impression of height. Put a table lamp on the white table and move the sectional a little bit away from the wall. I would not replace your new drapes, that seems really wasteful. Do get a large coffee table, a square one would probably be best. If worried about children running into it, then perhaps a large square ottoman which has long wooden legs so that it has a more airy look. If you place two chairs at the open side of the couch that should help to stop children from running into the table. Do lower the clock in the dining room and the pictures in the living room, and also the TV. Additional colorful pictures on the wall will create interest at eye level and decrease the feeling of too much height. After you buy the rug choose pillows for the couch and chairs that borrow colors from to create a harmonious whole. I see now that the chandelier in the dining room is also too high. It should be much lower over the dining table. Your drapes are beautiful!...See MoreHome Interiors with Ease
