Cross-Stitching

Rank beginner; how to get started?

I have never done cross stich, but for some reason it attracts me. So...how to learn? What is "counting cross stich"? What alternatives are there to "counting"? Should I get a how-to book? Should I go to a craft store and buy a kit? I'm clueless. Google has not been very helpful. TIA

If you are total beginner, I would suggest heading to Michael's or Hobby Lobby. They have cross stitch kits that include a stamped print so you can just follow along. They usually include instructions on the various stitches.

"Counted" cross stitch just means it's done on an evenweave fabric (usually fabric called aida cloth) that has no design printed on it. You fold the fabric lengthwise and crosswise to find the center. The pattern has the centers marked, too, so you start stitching in the center, following the symbols on the pattern.

I second the suggestion to go to Michael's or Hobby Lobby and find a beginner level kit. That way you have all the thread colors you need and the fabric.

Depending on where you're buying your plants, you could also be getting plants that were barely hanging on, diseased, already being watered to death, etc etc. Indoor florals at grocery stores are a big NO NO and NOOOO! since most of the plants there are barely rooted cuttings. Bouquets designed to last a little longer. Even Home Depot can utterly blow it with some of their indoor stock. I attempted to rescue a hen and chicks with the intent of hardening it off for outdoor use, but it was just too far gone. It was in a low light/ no light location and utterly drowning. It turned into a little flat mush ball less than 24 hours after getting it home. The one I got elsewhere is still doing a-ok. When you look at a plant in a store, look for signs of new growth, check for weird looking spots/ discolorations, look at the plants around it. If they have signs of spots, over watering, discoloration, leaves falling off, then it is more likely that the plant you're interested in has by contact got some of the same problems. The shipping conditions can be pretty bad, and disease can spread quickly. I also look for the plants that are budding, rather than blooming in flowers, so rather than taking it home and waiting eternity for it to bloom again, you can take it home, get it settled in and then see it bloom.

it's really kinda transition time for planting in the veg garden. i'd be leery, somewhat, of planting tomatoes or peppers or even eggplant this late in the game. in our zone, in six weeks or two months, the heat and humidity and (hopefully) rain will put an end to the useful life of most plants we think of as summer plants. forget chard. forget cukes. forget sweet peppers. they're either producing now, or they won't produce. i'd stick to crowders (god's gift to southern gardeners), sweet potatoes, cassava, sugarcane, celosia, malabar spinach (never grown it myself), okinawan spinach, basil, papaloquelite, okra... there may be a few other veg crops (and several other fruit crops) that grow in high summer (july, august), but not many. the bugs or the heat or the rain will destroy anything else.

"To start indoors you'll need some lights".... this seems to be taken as gospel in the US but in the UK almost no domestic gardener uses lights. You can raise a lot of seedlings on windowsills or in a glass porch or sunroom, or, as Fatamorgana says, if you wait a bit you can just direct sow. I sometimes think people just like the technical side of lights and don't realise that lights are not absolutely necessary. Regarding parsley - it actually does better direct sown since it has a taproot and disturbance encourages premature bolting.

My first thought for "black and bright blue swallowtail" would be Pipevine Swallowtail. Second would be Black Swallowtail. I would have to include yellow in my description of the Black Swallowtail. I'm not seeing the hummingbirds I'd like to be seeing in my yard but the butterflies numbers have been amazing. I've got host plants for most of the swallowtails, many of the sulphurs, Gulf Fritilaries and Zebra Heliconias, Monarchs, Cassius Blues, a number of skippers and probably some I'm forgetting or don't realize. Unfortunately, I've decided to try to completely remove my passion vine since it has gotten completely out of control. It started out in one spot in the yard and now grows throughout the yard as well as in all of my neighbor's yards. The Gulf Fritillaries lay individual yellow eggs anywhere on the vine in sunny areas while the Zebras lay yellow eggs in groups on the tips of the vines in shade. I've got Calico Flower that is the host for the Polydamus Swallowtail (Gold Rim). Their eggs are yellow and in clumps. I've had Pipevine Swallowtails lay red eggs on this vine but their caterpillars don't survive on it. I've started a Aristolochia tomentosa from seed for the Pipevines. Other swallowtail plants include various citrus (Giant), Black Cherry (Tigar)(also Red-spotted Purple), Bays (Spicebush), and a couple of fennels and parsleys for the Blacks. I've got Cassia/Senna bicapsularis, Cassia alata, and a Chapmann's Cassia for the sulphurs. Milkweed for the monarchs. Plumbago for the cassius Blue. Cannas for the Brazilian Skipper. And, various weeds (beans, grasses, fogfruit, beggars lice, bidens, etc.).

It's super easy. If you're at all skilled with crafts, you won't need any instruction, but do start with an easy project:

- Start with something small (so you can feel successful quickly) ... Christmas ornaments wouldn't be a bad starting point.

- Start with evenweave (Aida cloth) ...do not touch linen until you're experienced.

- Aida cloth comes with numbers ... 14 count means 14 "squares" per inch, 11 count means 11 "squares" per inch ... larger squares are easier for beginners. You could work the same pattern on two different sized cloths and end up with the same pattern enlarged /shrunk.

- If you get a plain pattern book (or even print one from the internet), it'll list all the thread colors you'll need for your pattern ... stick with DMC brand thread, and you'll find it easy to pick up the colors you need. Your thread will be six-stranded ... if you're using 11 or 14 count cloth, stitch with two strands.

- Pick up a small hoop to hold your pattern taut as you work.

- Tape the sides of your fabric so they won't unravel.

- Start in the MIDDLE of the pattern and work your way out.

- I like to enlarge my patterns on a xerox machine (my eyes aren't what they used to be) and mark them with a highlighter when I've finished a section.
