"She's a brick house..." Curb appeal advice needed!
Comments (16)If there is the thought of doing something major in a couple of years, what you PLAN now for the yard should take that into account. Without a doubt the stoop and sidewalk are killer for the landscape so that'd be something at the top of the list to redo. The stoop needs to be enlarged, the walk widened and pulled away from the house so that there is sufficient room for plantings. Rather than a hedge across a portion of the house, I'd settle for a dome-shaped shrub (you prune) that fits and coordinates with the window features. This is enough to give presence without smothering and leaves plenty of space for other plant interest .... flowering perennial & annuals and groundcover. Try to remove neglect and disfiguring of trees the best you can by pruning off lopsidedness and raising canopy bottoms so they permit your entire first floor to show without significant foliage obstruction. If there is an island around a tree, it should be reasonably proportionate to the spread of the canopy. Pretend that the island represents a container that the tree is growing in. Could a tree grow in a flower pot the size it is in the first picture? I think not! It needs to be enlarged substantially. Also, It would be better to have a clean looking trench edge, or a flush mowing strip rather than a raised edging (unless you're going to invest in perfect, professionally installed hardscape....See MoreNeed advice to update curb appeal of old house!
Comments (9)What's dark? Too much shade? Or the paint? If it's the paint, I'd advice picking a shade of cream that works with your siding and painting the brown stuff. You might get more light on the porch with just painting the ceiling white, light blue or cream. If it's the shade, you could, over a few years, remove some of the lower branches of the tree. A bigger, brighter welcome mat would help. One that is the width of the door. Flanking the door with pots with some kind of dry grass might help, too. And, of course, if it's dim at dusk, put in porch lights....See MoreCurb Appeal - Advice Needed Dress up Colonial Home
Comments (7)Therma Tru does make very nice doors. You can have them pre-painted in a factory finish in several different colors. A black front door would be classic. I would stay away from any leaded glass Victorian type doors and look for something in keeping with the Colonial style of your house. The 6/6 grid style windows are appropriate for your home's style. Rectangular windows to replace the arches are a very good idea. Good luck with your project!...See MoreNeed some curb appeal help for our mountain house!!!
Comments (13)i agree with most comments especially on how to treat the doors. Imagine looking at the picture you showed us & the ski door is same color as house - it’s gone! I like your idea of adding lighting to entry especially around the front door not storage door. If you want to add interest to that side wall with no symmetry maybe think about adding a locally interesting wall ornament that’s weather proof. Iron art? Snowboarder? Per @Olychick comments,be sure to hang it above the snow line!...See MoreDebbie Downer
