Red Oak refinishing advise
We just had our floors sanded today as we have been a major rehab of our living space. I have attached our floors pre sand, sanded, and grey color we are considering. The floors were a Bruce prefinished floors, so there are a lot of species and color variation in the flooring. We want to go with something other than clear, or the std oak color as we just tired of it. We plan on replacing the kitchen cabinets with Alabaster white.
What do you think of the grey color? Suggestions of other colors to get away from the traditional clear or gunstock type colors?

Comments (15)So, does this mean you have to have a new kitchen floor laid? The color looks good. In your first pictures, I preferred the lightest color, then the next lightest. I thought the dark one looked like a "wanna be walnut, but I'm oak". I have a prefinished oak flooring in natural that I have had for 10 years and I love it. Its by Mirage. I appreciate the light fresh look with my rooms. I had to have it reinstalled because the subcontracted installer banged up every nail insertion, because he must have had a damaged nailer. The owner of the flooring company came out the the flooring rep from Mirage, and they determined it was installation error. The finish was warrantied for something like 30 Years (can't remember the number) but with all the nicks, it wouldn't last. New install was great and the floor has been very good to me :) I'm getting it again soon in my bedroom, using a different installer company. All this to say I love my light flooring. Comments (3)If you like your current colour then go ahead and put down a new version of it. If you want something different then I would go lighter. I love the look of red oak in the 'buff'. It is a pretty wheat/sand coloured wood. So long as you work with a high-end water based polyurethane that does NOT yellow, you will have a very pretty 'pale wood' floor without much effort. Your existing finish appears to be oil based (or oil modified) which makes the floor yellow. The strong gold tones in your wood right now = the finish. Did your refinisher apply a coat of FINISH over your colour samples? If they did NOT....then you are picking BLIND. And I mean screaming and crying and tearing your hair because your beautiful gray floors turned to a muddy orange mess. Not good. Do you see the pale colour of the raw wood? You can keep that colour (very close to it) with 3 coats of water based polyurethane like Bona Traffic HD. Keep the gloss level a snick on the low side (satin is a nice low-gloss option) and you keep that pretty 'swedish blonde' look....See Morepaint colour for refinished red oak

6 years agoJacobean and Grey, bottom is popped, top is not. We also looked at Coffee Bean and Grey, but I think we are leaning with the jacobean and grey.

Top Left is Coffee Brown and Grey popped, both on the right are Jacobean and Grey with the upper the upper right popped

6 years agoHere are some photos, including one in which I had them leave a little bit of the older floor where the island will cover. It's cloudy today so not a lot of natural light in the photos. I'll post some final shots once it's completed and we have our floor trim down. Thanks for all of the advice from this site on the process and selecting of colors. If I had not of seen the how different colors will look on your own floor, as well as the change due to popping or adding urethane to the finish, I would not have believed the difference. Thanks again.
