people with open shelves or no uppers
Comments (34)breezy, i am looking forward to seeing your backsplash sooner rather than later. a not so subtle hint :-) michaelmcc, looking forward to seeing your kitchen! i agree grout is very tricky. i am struggling with grout right now in my bathrooms. artemis, do you think 19" is higher than usual for hanging shelves? i wasn't sure how high to put the shelves, but assumed that it should be at the same level as bottom of uppers. but if i hang it lower, i can access the items more easily.. rococogurl, those tiles are so pretty close up! though not sure i can swing ann sacks in the budget. i never knew their tile used to be more affordable. allison, that's good to know there are no splatters. but you are seriously going to redo your tile?? gorgeous as is, though i must admit, i would love to see you do it first so i can see how the morroccan tile will look (these are tiles that i have been dying to use, but am afraid to use) rosie, i am also only 5'2 so you bring up good points. i had been thinking to do two shelves one, on top of another, but it sounds like a good idea to maybe limit it to only one shelf and hang artwork since the top shelf might be out of reach for me. firsthouse, I love how clean your kitchen shelves are against the white. just curious, what is the benefit of having just a 1 inch backsplash versus no backsplash? i am getting quotes for countertops so i need to figure out what I should ask for now....See MoreHow much space do you have between your upper and lower cabs?
Comments (24)I learned something interesting from my contractor when we discussed mounting the wall cabinets a little higher so I could have enough space for certain appliances as well as a light rail. My contractor told me that I'd need to customize the cabinets by either reducing the height of the wall cabinets or increasing the height of the full-height cabinets (like the pantry and double oven cabinets.) Otherwise, mounting wall cabinets higher would result in cabinets where the tops don't line up. jayne p.s. I reduced the height of the wall cabinets to 34 1/2. I probably could have been fine with 35 inches but there's no way I would have known it until the end of the installation so better this way than not being able to cover the undercabinet lighting....See MoreFew upper cabs- where do you store your glasses?
Comments (14)Bdaykitchen, because doing without uppers meant a lack of concentrated storage in any particular counter area, I decided to do point-of-use storage for the dishes and split them off to different areas (fanned out from DW but mostly pretty close). Cups and cereal bowls over by the coffeemaker and refrigerator/pantry wall, water glasses close to the prep sink because no good space for them by the main one. Our island has 12" deep cabinets on its traffic side and the pantry wall is 12" deep, BTW, and those shallow shelves lend themselves nicely to dish and glass storage, although our everyday plates and hot-stuff bowls go in a drawer by the stove and table--the only ones I actually have to walk across the kitchen to put away. Hope there's an idea in there somewhere for your situation. I do love not having uppers....See MoreNO or Few Uppers - What is your take?
Comments (22)Sochi-Thank you so much for posting a quick mock up - it helps the visually challenged like myself! ;) I can honestly say the thought never occured to me to make it an all in one space in that way. I have to really think on this. I'm not sure how it would feel to have the table sort of be the island and be the only eating space. It does really open the space up though. I also need to think on having the table back right up to the family room....which isn't really much different than if it were an island with seating but hmmmm, totally new concept for me! While I think that set up is country kitchen at heart I'm feeling like it's kind of a modern approach (or just completely new to me so that = modern, lol).... I haven't played with the kitchen dimensions much yet (we are in the midst of loving the plan and making sure it's one that is within the budget). So I have played around with thoughts regarding the windows but haven't gotten into the nitty gritty in case the build itself is a budget buster and we have to do something else! I will be sure to post here for help when I am ready though. I don't want to use up too much of anyone's generously given time unless I know it's going to be the plan we end up with. We have already switched from a ranch to a 1.5 story due to the property that we purchased. Thank you so much for your ideas! This site is so awesome at helping to think out of the box and get an efficient and pleasing to the eye workspace! I will be back for more as we get closer!...See Moremaddybeagle
