Too Close? Too Far? Just right.

I have a 48" wall hung vanity and have selected a 48" recessed mirror/medicine cabinet to go above it. Wall sconces would probably end up being about 54" apart if we were to hang them 3" from recessed mirror/ med cabinet. Is that too far or doable? Opening of doors to medicine cabinet will not be a problem as they hinge the right way(s). Sconces would be 8.75 wide and 12.8 tall. Thank you!

How much light will you have at the mirror? Will you have overhead light in addition to sconces? Do you have a picture of your ideas?

Enduring, thank for our response. We decided it best to go with a smaller mirror and place sconces on either side. I think the mirror was going to be too big for my taste.

Had this same problem with mine. My guess the half moon sector gear has slipped pass the steering wheel shaft gear down under the battery or gas tank depending on your model. Just follow the steering wheel shaft down till you see the splines and the half moon sector gear. These are burger to get back aligned. Bracket, Bushings, splines shafts wear and allow it to slip. Usually makes noise when it slips especially it you hit something with the front tires. Craftsman IMO is poor steering design it will turn tight one way and not as tight the other way even when new. You need to watch the half moon gear ( can't think of the name sector I think) while turning the wheel full travel. IF you see a lot more teeth on one end of the half moon gear then it has slipped cog or two allowing it to turn further in one direction. If that's not it my other guess is the steering plate is worn allowing the front tires to tilt back too far hitting the deck. Or long shot the bolt and nut that holds the front steering plate to the frame could be loose or worn. Either way you should see the wheel tilt back when turning the steering wheel full travel left to right. replacing the steering sector, bushing, and shaft is NO EASY task. You will probably find lots of worn parts from the top plastic shaft bushing all the way down. Sears parts direct probably has most of the parts on hand. Good luck been their done that. It will test you mechanical ability that's for sure IMO.

Is your potager too big, too small, or just right?

ali-b, I used my tomato cages last year as hoop houses. I opened them up and arched them over my potager beds, then covered them with floating row cover. I had greens, lettuce, carrots, and onions all winter long. Our lowest temps were eleven degrees. The greens stood through that without any protection at all. I was delighted and amazed. For your climate, you would want a heavier cover, but the tomato cages worked great as the "skeleton" and the openings were large enough to reach in for harvest. As to size, my potager is just about right for the three of us (DH, mother-in-law, and me). We eat fresh food from it very nearly twelve months a year, and when I have excess, which I have had this year, I give them to a poor family in our church. They are so grateful since their landlord won't allow them to garden and fresh produce is so expensive at the grocery. I have 9 raised beds that are approximately 8'x3.5'. At the west and south corners I have dwarf apple trees. In other areas of the yard I have six blueberry bushes, a fig tree, and two plum trees (these are an experiment). I grow strawberries in two large tubs on my deck. I gardened in a traditional row garden for ten years or more. I hated it. I could never control the weeds and it was ugly (to me). I finally gave up and only went back to growing veggies last year. I stumbled upon this forum by accident and went straight to Amazon to buy books. I just love these little beds. It takes about an hour to clean one out, amend and turn it, replant, and remulch. Because it's so easy, I keep them in pristine condition and continually productive.

How far is too far for vacation home?

We seriously considered purchasing a home about an hour and a half away, in good weather. In the winter, it could take hours and hours. An old historical home in the high country at 6100 ft elevation. In the end we decided it was much cheaper to rent the cabin for a week a year, buy investment property closer with a positive cash flow year round. Of course, this is California and NOTHING is cheap. An extra $1600. a month house payment just didn't make sense. But we were tempted until we learned the house has been for sale for three years. LOL. We'd have to keep it permanently on the market if we ever hoped to sell it again. So much for those high country Gold Rush towns in the Sierras that we love so much. Also, once you own a property, those vacation weekends quickly turn into work weekends. We decided to keep it as a vacation spot.

I think the narrower mirror makes sense for a singe-bowl vanity.

Shrink the mirrors and bring the sconces closer to being inside the lateral footprint of the vanity.

Lighting...it's not just the number of points that provide illumination, but the number of lumens that those points output. Each sconce can have a single, or multiple bulbs, for example. Per bulb there can be a different "watt consumption" per bulb. Different light color outputs; warm light (2700K) through daylight (5000K).

Overall, look at what Enduring was leaning towards...sources to provide balanced light. No harsh raking shadows across the face when looking in the mirror, etc.

Well, my cup of morning coffee is just about gone as I'm drifting off with these tangential discussions, so...time to get on to the daily chores!

Yes Mongo, I was wondering about quality and quantity of light.

For putting on makeup I really like having lots of lumens. In the east bathroom that DH now uses for most of his grooming, I have 100watt halogen bulbs on each side of the mirror. I think that is around 1600 lumens per bulb. But a calculator I just used says its 2000 lumens. So at the mirror for DH to shave it is 3200 to 4000 lumens. It works well for him.

In my other bathroom (west) that I use for makeup, I have 2 sconces that each have 120 watts halogen. It seems to put out less light. But the room has more dark pieces of furnishings, so maybe that is why. According to the calculator I should have 4800 lumens at that mirror. I would not want less. I have a dimmer on that switch, but never use it because I need the light. I also have 2each 50w halogen overhead lights in the ceiling. This room is 8x10. I would not be happy with any less lighting.
