Steering turns too far too left

Hello! I have a Craftsman Ride on model # 917.270671.
I am having an issue with the steering turning too far to the left which then causes my wheel to contact the cutting deck and causes my wheel to lock. I don't know if the mower has some type of prevention mechanism which stops it from turning the wheel to far and I don't want to take the steering apart until I know if that is where the problem lies. I have a photo of the wheel all the way to the left when it touches.

It looks like the axle is bent back, though hard to tell from this shot. The crosslink that goes between the two spindles may be bowed rather than straight. Posting more views may help/.

Had this same problem with mine. My guess the half moon sector gear has slipped pass the steering wheel shaft gear down under the battery or gas tank depending on your model. Just follow the steering wheel shaft down till you see the splines and the half moon sector gear.

These are burger to get back aligned. Bracket, Bushings, splines shafts wear and allow it to slip. Usually makes noise when it slips especially it you hit something with the front tires. Craftsman IMO is poor steering design it will turn tight one way and not as tight the other way even when new.

You need to watch the half moon gear ( can't think of the name sector I think) while turning the wheel full travel. IF you see a lot more teeth on one end of the half moon gear then it has slipped cog or two allowing it to turn further in one direction.

If that's not it my other guess is the steering plate is worn allowing the front tires to tilt back too far hitting the deck. Or long shot the bolt and nut that holds the front steering plate to the frame could be loose or worn. Either way you should see the wheel tilt back when turning the steering wheel full travel left to right.

replacing the steering sector, bushing, and shaft is NO EASY task. You will probably find lots of worn parts from the top plastic shaft bushing all the way down. Sears parts direct probably has most of the parts on hand. Good luck been their done that. It will test you mechanical ability that's for sure IMO.

Even if it's not quite done, it will finish eventually. The final phase of composting is a long tail rather than a fast hot process. Now, if you're needing compost soon and there are wood chips in there, you could add some greens. Grass clippings would be good, high N plus they would help fluff the pile if mixed in thoroughly, at least for awhile until they break down. Don't turn it too much if you want it to stay warm. Usually in spring I turn that fall pile as early as I can, and by planting season (April-May) it's ready to use.

We seriously considered purchasing a home about an hour and a half away, in good weather. In the winter, it could take hours and hours. An old historical home in the high country at 6100 ft elevation. In the end we decided it was much cheaper to rent the cabin for a week a year, buy investment property closer with a positive cash flow year round. Of course, this is California and NOTHING is cheap. An extra $1600. a month house payment just didn't make sense. But we were tempted until we learned the house has been for sale for three years. LOL. We'd have to keep it permanently on the market if we ever hoped to sell it again. So much for those high country Gold Rush towns in the Sierras that we love so much. Also, once you own a property, those vacation weekends quickly turn into work weekends. We decided to keep it as a vacation spot.

Any way you lay out the kitchen, you're going to have a traffic path through the middle, except for a U, which takes most of the dining area. You need to think about how you enter, how guests enter, and how you want to use the kitchen. Here's another plan with a nice prep space, with the appliances arranged more like cpartist suggested, but it keeps the peninsula across the room, and preserves the dining area. You'd have your back to the long hall and front entry--that's probably really bad Feng Shui, but if you'd prefer the sink under the window, then it's a good plan. What size fridge and sink are you planning to use? If you have 118" available on the top wall, and subtract 24" for the cabinet on the right, 30" for a sink, 30" for the fridge, 24" + 2" for the DW and return panel, plus a couple of inches of filler beside the sink cab, that leaves 6" for the pull-out/filler beside the fridge. If the fridge will be enclosed, subtract another 2-3". I don't know if that would be enough to allow the fridge door to open far enough to remove the crisper for cleaning.

The vanity will be in the middle of the wall, between the toilet and the shower, so there's no side wall, unfortunately. And sorry about the text - it wouldn't let me edit for clarity, so I might just redo the thread. Thanks for weighing in!

Yes, its a maddening job to change those steering parts, and not cheap, either. If you have lots of patience, with those jobs, then do it yer-self. But, i warn you, if you have a short temper with that kind of work, better pay somebody to do it! I did my own, and bought and swilled down a case of liquid refreshment, before i was finished!
