How far should island be from counters?
Comments (7)48" is plenty, but it depends on how much space you have on the other side of the island. In our case, the kitchen is open into the rest of the great room, so we decided to push the island out to 60" (5 feet.) This allows the 2 of us to easily cook or work in the kitchen without bumping into each other. You will need to take into account the placement of your primary work areas, as well as your cooking style/work pattern. How often do you go back and forth from the main sink? Is the island used for prep/cooking, or do you do most of that in the wall units? In our case, we use the island about 75% of the time for prep. I even put a baking center at one end, with everything from flour to mixing bowls and utensils in drawers so you don't have to walk all over the place. One thing which helped was to mock out the distance on the floor with masking tape so I could see and feel how it felt. I'm pretty tall with long legs so I appreciate the extra distance, you may not....See MoreMain sink far from prep sink - where is garbage pullout?
Comments (5)We have DWs on either side of the main sink too, and we didn't have the depth to put a pullout on the back side of the island across from it, so we put a trash and a recycling can under the main sink. We were able to put a single can pullout next to the prep sink and that has worked for us. We fill the one at the prep sink about as fast as the one under the sink and they are close to the same size -- the prep sink one being slightly larger (they use the same size bags). Just have something at each sink....See MoreHow far is too far for tile at front entrance?
Comments (9)And depending upon where you are, if it snows and that rug collects moisture...your wood underneath is history. If you're planning to tile the front entry, depending upon your layout of home, either tile the entry only...or if the front door leads into a large room, tile wide enough to pass the door, at a 90 degree angle, open by 1'-2'. If you plan to tile the 1/2 bath, run the tile into it. If not, tile simply around the front door....See MoreHow far should sink be from edge of island?
Comments (13)If the granite fabricator wants only 22" interior width but you want a 24" interior width, it seems that the fabricator wants only one more inch of granite on that side. Is there any way to slide the sink further to the other side to give him that inch? Joseph recently posted an explanation of how to minimize a sink rail width by eliminating clips and using a harness in this link here. It don't know if it would help in this circumstance, and, as granite guru points out, the issue may be the size of the cut out itself. I am just learning this stuff now in preparing my own remodel, so hopefully a pro could comment on this (perhaps crazy) idea I am throwing out. But I found Joseph's explanation so helpful here, that I thought I'd share it in hopes that it helps you too....See Morebeachem
