European fashions

After glancing through the replies on Annie's "Polished?" thread, I decided to post what I saw in Europe fashion-wise. BTW, that picture appeared to be European in origin to me, especially the wonderful addition of the cig butts. The women in Paris are really fashionable, but not over the top. I expected to see tons of Louis Vuitton and Chanel handbags, but the only women I saw carrying them were Asian tourists. Asian tourist fashion-that's a whole other story. Talk about over the top expensive. Back to the Parisians--a lot of scarves as accessories, and nice shoes. I don't know how they walk those cobbled streets with their nice shoes, but they do.

Croatian fashion is completely different, and what I personally thought of as tacky. Fur on their shoes (even gym shoes or "trainers" as they call them) and lots of metallic coats and faux leather leggings. Went shoe shopping with DD because she wanted to find some cute but sensible shoes for teaching, and it took us about 4 shoe shops to find anything suitable and not tacky.

I tried to fit in, especially with the Parisians, but I had to wear my gym shoes, pegging me as American. But we walked about 17,000-27,000 steps a day, and I got blisters even with my gymmies. and yes, we did use public transport but there is still a lot of walking.

sleeperblues -- Are you home? "Fashions" are interesting, but what *else* can you tell us about your trip?

There are some UG-LEE photos in today's Sunday Tribune. Lots of pairing of unlike fabrics and styles, all on one model, like the float-y sheer skirt shown with the leather motorcycle jacket. Another looked like my 6-year-old DGD's art project: Chicken feathers glued onto a dress. (Wear and throw away?)

Chisue, yes we are home. After a horrendous day of travel yesterday. From Zagreb to Paris to Iceland to home. About 12 hours of flying, with layovers. We had a wonderful time. Loved Paris, want to move there for 3-6 months when we retire and learn the language. Croatia is wonderful too, more slow paced especially now that tourist season is over. Mostly beautiful weather, back to 40s and rainy.

I had a point somewhere when I started that thread on this subject which I can't find now. So I'll settle on Cactus Joe's thread. Anyway I came across an article on Kordes in my old Rosebank news letters. It was an article by Harry McGee in September, 1995. The occasion was a visit to Canada by Wilhelm III. It has a good history of the Kordes firm. It started with Wilhelm the first in 1890 in Hamburg. Wilhelm II joined in 1919 in Sparrieshoop. He was succeeded by a non-Wilhelm but still a Kordes, Reimer. Then came the III. All were in charge of breeding operations. Other family members ran the business side. What is relevant in all of this is that the hybridizer was preminent in the firm and therefore put emphasis on that. At that time Kordes was the largest rose nursery in the world selling 2 million roses a year. They made 50,000 crosses a year. After a rose is singled out as a prospect it is grown for 6 or 7 years of testing before it is introduced. They probably are still the largest. Possibly the odds of creating a superior rose are in favor of those who do the most crosses. Stands to reason doesn't it? Even just blind choice should produce now and then something of value. One thing Mr. Kordes said that was interesting is that many breeders have stopped breeding HT's. One reason is that fewer people go to exhibitions. The other is that they are more difficult to get anything worthwhile. Hard to make disease resistant, many are single, fragrance is rare, have fewer hips and what they have don't germinate well and finally they produce fewer flowers. The emphasis on disease resistance began as a result of the Green Parties efforts to ban spraying in many parts of Germany. Kordes then stopped spraying. The result was disaster. Their fields became nearly barren of roses. I guess things have improved since then.

I agree that you should call the police if he's exposing himself publicly though I'd be willing to bet he doesn't realize what he's doing. I know I've been guilty of standing in front of windows naked without realizing it if I get distracted by the phone ringing when I'm getting dressed or something. I sure hope no one took a picture, lol. I'm probably alone here, and it's just my opinion, but what I don't really get though is the public bashing. It's one thing to be annoyed but you've called them low life, fat, disgusting, stupid, ugly, awful, bad dressing, "enhancement" needing, jerk, a-holes, hairy, couldn't pass the Bar, gold digging skanks and then posted a picture on a public forum. That seems like a lot of superficial name-calling and I think the picture is way over the top. I wouldn't like to see my neighbors naked either but it seems low to make fun of how they look on a message board, especially if you don't know if they are doing it on purpose or not or if there's some underlying mental illness or other factors you don't know about. I guess I don't understand the purpose of it other than a venting measure? You don't seem to have any real proof that he is purposely trying to expose himself to children so I don't get why you would insult them in such a visual way other than you just don't like them. I mean, yeah she probably shouldn't be running around in her underwear but maybe there was a reason for it. It just seems weird to me that you would post a picture of it on a public forum. I'm probably going to get flamed for this but I can take it, lol. I do sincerely hope you find relief though. If it's making you uncomfortable then it's not ok. I'd personally try the anonymous note in case he doesn't realize how visible he is.

LOL Shee. I love small bags, which is good, because I'm short! Re the v-necks, I've read somewhere that those come into play with different face shapes, so it may be that a t-neck is not unflattering to some. Or perhaps what you wear over the t-neck makes a difference (the neckline or scarf, necklace,etc.). Another thing I have to be careful about because of my height is jacket lengths. They can't be too long or I look "dumpy". tina

You're missing a few things off your list. 1. Blum drill jig (about 200 plus dollars. Accurately drills all three holes in seconds) 2. A tape measure (there's enough up and down adjustment in those hinges to calculate and install the base plate without holding up the door using #3. 3. Small Blum drilling template for position of base plate screws. 4. Beer is to be consumed after job is complete and you are admiring your work.

We were advised when my husband took a 2 year site assignment for work near Den Haag in the Netherlands not to wear typical American clothing or shoes - No brands or sports teams or the quintessential sneakers. This was by caution from the American Embassy in 2006. We are not, however, tall or blonde people so it was a moot point.

There was an Egyptian family who rented a place on our street - the father was a lesser ambassador to NL - when he was there he had very beefy BMW's in front of his home with body guards. The family put a giant poster of Jesus in their 2nd floor window to signal to the community that they were Christians.

I admire women of any age and ethnic origin who take care to be stylish - I aspire to that myself despite a prominent birthmark on my chin and loss of both of my breasts to cancer. I chose not to have any reconstruction - scarves and layering are my friend.

One CAN fine non-trainers that are comfortable for walking in Paris - I have!

Yes, the Asian ladies attire is interesting. All have designer bags - Vuitton, Chanel, Hermes. But then they wear jeans, a t-shirt and a long, dark, dreary coat. They are far from looking fashionable.

No, one sees very few Parisians carrying the designer bags as they cannot afford them. One only sees them in certain districts, like the 7th arr. They are shopping in the neighborhood in which they live. If they are carrying Chanel or Hermes (never seen carrying Vuitton), it's black and subtle and classic. It's the Asian ladies who love the very bright colored Hermes, usually a Birkin.

It is interesting in both London and Paris to see the Middle Eastern women in their burkas, faces fully covered except eyes, carrying huge Birkins in very bright colors. Boy, can those women shop!

Anglo, I started looking at other women's shoes and I did see some more fashionable options. Next time, I will up my game. I did wear my chanel scarf I found in a thrift store for 7.99, lol. I believe it's authentic, but who knows? The Asian ladies I saw were really quite well dressed, but out of place in my opinion. Who needs to walk up the Arc in high heels and fur lined wool coats? Or browse the Louvre? Without a doubt, Paris is a great place for people watching!
