Furniture Design Dilemma

Help with rug size and end tables for living room

I am currently decorating my living room from scratch, and am trying to determine what rug size to buy. I moved our 8x11 dining room rug into this picture to get an idea of how that size would look. I'm concerned that the right side of the couch is too close to the right side of the rug - would you increase the rug to a 9x12? In that case, should the loveseat and couch be fully on the rug?

Also, this room does not have any overhead lighting, so we need to get some lamps in - any suggestions for floor lamp versus end table + table lamp placement would be appreciated. I'm unsure if I need an end table for the center of the L plus each end.

Can you rotate the rug 90°? I think that would solve your challenge.

Your room is definitely screaming for some color and life. Since the whole room is neutral, we're going to have some fun with this project. You have 2 choices when you decorate. Your area rug size is ok, just to blah . First choice pick a contemporary or modern area rug, pick the strongest color from the carpet use as your color theme.

Second choice can be a modern or contemporary art piece , pick the strongest color from the art and decorate around the color. Add a large palm, or banana plant in either corner. I'd use a large floor lamp in between the sofas. As far as the your coffee table idea, use a large square ottoman instead. Your sofa pillows choices are crucial , just look at decorating the sofa with a fiesta party feel. Make sure you stick with that one strong color from either the artwork or area rug. Over stock.com has great choices for area rugs and art. Another idea is face both the luv seat and sofa towards is other.

What you've done thus far looks lovely, the dining room is yummy. Most of the living room is done well but I have a little issue with the balance of the room. In the photo ,looking straight on to the sofa, I see that it's not centered on the wall and the chevron pattern chair seems crowded. Is it possible to center the couch and move your heirloom between the two windows to another spot. Take the chevron chair and put it at an angle up near the window more to the right of the window. Then take your heirloom piece and place it to the left of the sofa. Just a suggestion.

I'm a fan of #2. I always like the look of two club chairs side by side like that. I think having them together as one unit balances out the heft of a sofa and the huge TV. I agree that it makes sense to focus on the coffee table first. Are there any textures in your room? If everything is just flat wood, paint, and upholstery, I'd suggest a coffeetable that has a bit or texture or reflectivity to it. What kind of books are you looking to store in this room? I got a three tired brass and glass coffee table from West Elm recently and it is a fantastic place to display 12 huge art books. Better than a bookshelf. When people sit on the sofa, they actually gaze that the books, pull them out and read them. I like that.
